Fantastic Shot! Really, one in a million. Doesn't matter where he got it- He planned for it, and it happened. How many times have you planned for the shot and it just missed. The burst was just a fraction of a second off, the light wasn't quite right, the water too choppy. Let's just acknowledge a great shot when you see it....

I have used Manfrotto Rolling 50 bag for five years. Check your size requirements against airline allowable dimensions for carry-on baggage. Manfrotto now has 50 to 70 series bags for around $300-$350 (B&H). Holds more camera gear than you would need for most trips, 2 camera bodies, lenses galore, adjustable pockets. Best recommendation- check the wheels before you buy. You want them to last.

Navajo guided tours take you where you can't go by yourself. The 20 mile drive is nice but you'll get alot more from having a guide. I took two tours with Phillips, AM (6:30-10:30 sunrise) and PM (3:30-7:30 sunset). 4 wheel drive is necessary off the beaten path, max of four photogs (I had 1 other in AM, by myself in PM). Cost was $125 each tour. Try to get more time in the park - one night is not nearly enough!!

How many great shots did you miss because you left your camera at home, in the car, etc.

A good shot from a phone is better than the memory of the one that got away...

My daughter went to SCAD 25 years ago in Savannah. First class school with the best facilities and practical learning experience in the Southeast for the arts, design and photography. Big $$$$$ for tuition. Don't know much about their film school in Atlanta, but I know it has ties to the local industry and would assume it to be first rate as well. In the film/tv/video industry, practical experience is king. Check that SCAD can give that as well as classroom stuff.

School is privately owned and is for profit. (Big $$$$ tuition). Talk with grads about their experiences. My daughter (graphic designer) did not graduate from SCAD but got her training at portfolio center with a group of SCAD graduates. My son got a degree in communications (not SCAD), went to NY and got in the internet/video industry. That's a tough business. He burned out after four years...

I bought a Tamron 150-600 for a Yellowstone trip several years ago. (Canon 7d Mk ii). 7d is a crop sensor so you are getting a push in range to bump that up to about 840. Throw in an extender and you bump it out even further (at the expense of higher aperture). It is a heavy lens and really requires a tripod. I'm not as steady as I used to be at age 76. I bought a Canon 100-400 f/4 from KEH and used it on the 7D at an airshow last month. Easier to handle, all hand held, great pictures. I have an extender to use if I need to go further but it gets awkward to handle hand held. Why spend the money for new gear unless you are having A GAS attack...

Every time I think I need a new lens, I rent one for a weekend or short trip. I'm fortune enough to live close to Aperature Rent in Atlanta and the cost of a specialty lens is pretty cheap for a weekend. If I thought I would use it, then I could buy it. So far, rentals work out fine for me.
