I have used Datacolor Spyder X for the past year. I think there are so many variables for synchronizing a monitor to a PC it is tough and nearly impossible even for the best tools or programs.

After a bit of logic I decided to try something different and maybe simple.

I held a large grey card next to my monitor for the first time. The day was especially overcast and dark plus the room lighting was a factor. The match was not even close. But I used the best calibration tool available... hmmm

To the chase...

Go to Photoshop and create a 4000 x 6000 pxl adjustment layer. Then fill the layer with 50% grey and save it as a Jpeg. Also kept the layer from Photoshop open on the monitor.

Next, open the grey jpeg layer just created on your Mac or pc. Now you can see the same 50% grey image displayed on both screens. You will most likely see two different shades of Grey like I did... and a different shade than the gold standard physical grey card you have in your hand making it three...

Do this... manually adjust the monitor color to the physical grey card. Next adjusted the Mac or pc with its custom color adjustment to the physical card and adjusted monitor. All will now match perfectly and you will be able to adjust easily for the effects of ambient and room light at any time.

The most important point is you can get perfect white balance between the two screens with out buying expensive calibration gear that doesn't work.

If someone says their fancy calibrator gizmo does work, then try comparing your physical grey card to you calibrated screen, you may be amazed...

I verified the results on another pc, a tablet and my Samsumg fold for comparison under the same ambient and in the same room lighting. I also re edited another layer and checked it with the eye dropper in Photoshop and it was perfect...

Oh, and all of those pre programed white balance options like I have on my Macbook Pro M2Max are useless...

Interesting post--thanks!

Question: Do your prints match your screen?

Lol. Not to worry. Clearly we're just a bunch of bored old farts.

It depends. If you’re quoting a question it’s inside the quotation marks. If it’s question about the quote it’s outside. If it’s question about a quote that’s a question it’ll have one inside and another outside! 😜🤪

Well, I won't even try to unwind that one, but I suspect you're right.

And let's not get started on "your" and "you're".

And we somehow left out "they're", the contraction of "they are".

Or my personal pet peeve: "lose", "loose", "loser", "looser". You know who you are.

Trust me, though. I screw up too.

Do they work well for you? They look very interesting, but also seem to have many of the same features. What is the difference?

Never heard if them before..

It's funny when the grammar police get it wrong.

"Theirs"means "belonging to them".

"There's"means "there is".

Most AF systems do benefit from settings changes for specific subject matter. There are probably some videos on YouTube for every brand and model, suggesting settings for particular subjects.

Sean Robinson of Panasonic recently did a Lumix Live podcast on the hybrid PDAF systems in the new S5 II, S5 IIX, and G9 II bodies. He does a lot of motorcycle racing photography, so he has identified particular combinations of settings that work for that, and others that work for portraits, sports action, still life, landscape, birds in flight, animals in brush, etc.

I'm pretty sure there are videos by Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Olympus experts who have refined their settings for specific purposes.

Using any camera "out of the box" is likely to be hit or miss, depending upon the subject matter.

Thanks Bill. I actually had a very good analog monitor but gave it away in a fit of downsizing when I switched to Apple. Vivid Metal Prints recommended a brand to go with, Asus if i remember correctly.

I Would prefer to use my 14" Macbook Pro. Do you know if they can be calibrated with a kit?

https://vividmetalprints.com/ is a company in Lexington, NC, just down the road from me. They specialize in printing ON metal with aluminum dye-sublimation. Check them out! They have been around for 20 years. Dye sub is an old process known for its saturated colors.

They were formerly "ImageMeisters" I think, and claim to have originated the process for printing Dye-sub on metal. They've done three very nice large prints for me, but I won't do any more until I have a calibrated monitor, so I won't have to do a lot of back and forth till it comes out right.

Nikon has way better eye detection...and phase AF.

Weight...well Nikon likes to go heavy for some reason.

Interesting. Have you used both?

Eye detection on Nikon, Canon, and Sony are all excellent. You will not save much weight going with the OM-1 with telephoto lenses.
The difference is the skill, knowledge, and experience of the photographer. If you don't set your camera up for the type of shooting your doing you will not get good results.

Not save weight? On telephoto lenses?

That is absurd. Do the math.

OM1 is a great camera. With the longer lenses there is a huge savings in size and weight. The eye detection is very good. Price of lenses is a substantial savings over equivalent focal length full frame midels. I went to Olympus with the EM1, then 2, then 3, now have two OM1s. Never going back.
