Thank you burkphoto! I have been concerned about the Ext drive size. It makes sense. Been looking around for another large drive. All of my programs are on the C drive which is a 256 SSD and about 2/5 full. I assume it is 5400 RPM. I may try to transfer files to reduce the size of the ext drive and see if that makes a difference. I will attempt a defrag also.

Wow, I'm so excited with the response. As a result of the first response I did more digging in LR troubleshooting section. Had gone through most but didn't check if I were an administrator user. Doing that seemed to speed up things quite a bit, and the frequency of lock ups diminished but still occur, sometimes system is very slow.

I am running a 2.5 Ghz i7-4710 with 16 GB RAM, 64-bit OS, Windows 10 Home (up to date), Intel HD Graphics 4600 (up to date), approx. 1 TB remaining on a 6 TB WD External HDD.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Is anyone having these issues and what are you doing about it. My Lightroom is now slower, it locks up on a whim, won't allow catalog to update upon closing, have to shut down machine. Have reloaded twice and done several other things. Becoming very frustrating. Have been using LR for eons, usually can figure it out. No one helping on LR forum. Like they say, there are more fish in the sea, maybe time to try something else.

Okay, where do i start?! These are great forums, but I only use them as a last resort, why? because N-users always have to make comments about equipment. I'll stack my equip up anytime.

You are right, I first noticed this in scanned slides. Since then i have been more conscious of the phenom. Not only did I want to fix it, I wondered if it was something I was doing.

But, here's my thoughts after further review of more photos. I'm tending to believe the photon noise theory enhanced by the strong polarization. The darker the sky, generally at the top, has more visible and stronger noise, which gradually diminishes as you go lower in the sky. Photos with light polarization show less, or no noise. In the past, I have used NIK SW with some success. Also have used TOPAZ NR, with not as much success as the SW applies to the entire photo. Best results from isolating the sky and applying fix. LR luminance slider is also good. If you cannot sleep at night , google "photon noise in photography", and start reading the univ. of Chicago article on the subject!

Downloaded DPP. Initially impressed, however, truly a fish out of water with this SW. Have to study some tutorials. Have been using LR forever. Have no clue of a workflow with DPP. Would like to use DPP as my primary. Any suggestions for using this SW?

Re: last comment about lighting optimizer, why? What does it do?

I sincerely appreciate your time, sharing your expertise, and all of the comments and suggestions. Now back to the field without the filters! I don't think we had these issues with smaller sensors.

Thank you.

I'm kinda dumbfounded. Using 5DIII, 16-35L, Singh-ray warming polarizer, shooting aperture priority f8 to f11, ISO 200 and I'm getting a lot of sky noise. If it's visible in the sky, it must be throughout the photo. Doing nothing unusual processing in Lightroom and Photoshop CC. What am I missing or doing wrong? All thoughts welcome. Thanks.

For those having been there, are there any elevated observation points away from the festival grounds that may be easily accessible for photographing the balloons in flight just after launch. First time in ABQ, so any suggestions will be welcome. Thx.

Thanks for the replies; they all sound fairly simple for an old codger! I did take advantage of the free Nik software, quite a bargain. Thanks again. CP

Using CC, what is the best way to remove noise from the sky only. I have had old slides and negatives scanned and noise really shows in the sky, moreso than the rest of the photo.

My transition from 8.1 to 10 went so smoothly I couldn't believe it. My only issue is in Lightroom where my Topaz plugins are not working properly. Adobe has seemed to slough it off, probably because it is not theirs. Anyway still trying to fix.

On a computer with Win7 to 10 was a non event. Although it did not have CC.
