Its certainly is a great deal IF you want and will use both. I use mostly Lightroom and when I need it I use Elements 13 as a backend to it. I personally don't have the time or interest for the very steep learning curve needed to master PS. So for me, the Lightroom standalone update for $79 was a better deal. If, as some have suggested, this is the last standalone version Adobe will publish I will have to reevaluate my approach to PP at some time in the furure.

I agree 100%, the only difference is that I use Perfect Photo Suite 9.5 to do what Lightroom does not.

I'm on that same page you are!! Different strokes for different folks and that's just based on my hobbyist status as a photographer, if I were earning $$ from it I may view it differently.

I will second that...

Eventually with an upgrade in the OS (Windows or OS X), LR6 will stop working. No one knows when will happen, but it will happen.

Yup I am sure that will happen, by then or before I will have to commit or find something else.

Subscription model is cheaper. And you can always stop using LR/PS and use something else. Leasing is just a slightly different method of ensuring cash flow, and by making it cheaper they have dramatically reduced piracy. Yes, if you do the math on the cost of "ownership" and subscription - it is considerably cheaper.

How is that Gene.. If I upgraded from LR4 to LR6 via download at $79.00 a good deal, but I wanted the standalone version so I popped for $142.00. For A one year rental at $120.00 yes I paid more, but I don't upgrade for at least two years or more..lets see standalone $142 verses $220 for two yr sub, hmm. Adobe is going to make ALLOT more money now and keep us HOOKED for ever.

It maybe better and more up to date as one goes along but you are leasing the programs and don't own them. If you drop your subscription you lose the ability to use the "Develop" module in LR.

Yeah I agree, it is not for me.. Ive got LR6 stand alone and OnOne Perfect Photo Suite 9.5, so these two are going to work for me...the OnOne software keeps getting better every year..so No subscription here.

Check out the GITZO Tripod Holster at either B&H Photo or Amazon.. I have the momopod holster for my monopod, it attaches to my belt and is easy to access... It is working great for me.

All it would take is a new CEO or new CFO that has a different idea about how the business should be run, and just like that, everything you are used to and thought would never happen, happens.

I personally don't like the subscription model and have little need to get the latest minor software tweak. I have no need for Photoshop. Gimp works for me. I am still using Lightroom 4.4. I don't recall exactly what I paid for it (probably about $80), but if I were subscribing for $10/month, I would have paid multiple hundreds of dollars for software that cost me $80. At some point I will probably be forced to subscribe. Until then, I'm saving $10/month.

I agree, however I am in the process of upgrading to LR6 and will hokd out as long as I can...

Thanks for the feedback. My wife needed at least LR 5.3 for the OM-D support. We were not able to upgrade to the latest version being LR 5.7.2 so we ended up buying LR 6. Got the upgrade price of $79 and installed it this afternoon. Not sur now what my apprehension was. Both of our catalogs were upgraded to 6 and it seems to work flawlessly. Thanks to all who responded.

Where did you buy LR6 to get the upgrade? I have LR4 and wanted to upgrade to LR6 but could not find the upgrade... I tried B&H Photo nothing, tried Amazon Nothing tried Adobe nothing. In all of these cases all I had to buy LR6 outright for $142.00, so I got it from Amazon...There was NO update version on Amazon or B&H for 6, they had LR5 update version for $79.00 only.

and I keep paying and paying and paying along with the inevitable price increases down the road. I have Uverse TV. I'm on my second year of the contract and the price goes up every month without an explanation. these companies have NO scruples.

WE might be getting a little off topic here, but, I have cable have had it forever and yes every year the price goes up but we call and negotiate and we end up paying our price not their price increase...or we dump them and get something else, because they do not want to loose business, try it.

As for this original thread, I used DPP until I tried Lightroom and never looked back.. If you go that course buy the software, then you have a hard copy and later you can try Adobe CC.

Hi, jboy24,
Welcome to ETTR, and maybe to EBTR IF YOU're of a mind t'try it! It's great being able to capture the highest possible quality image data -highest possible Signal-noise ratio - and get much improved shadow detail, collected as far as possible away from the Mother Lode of noise...the lower left portion of the JPEG-adjusted histogram frame. Check the Leopard portrait; no NR needed.

Thanks for looking and for your comments.

Dave

Hi Dave, Thank you and you are welcomed... I just very recently got back from a tip to Death Valley National Park in California where I used this ETTR technique exclusively and got some amazing shots which by the way I still have to process yet. BTW your Leopard portrait is amazing!!!

This has been a fascinating thread... When I moved fro film (and sometimes still shoot film) to digital I read on many of the pro sites to use ETTR. Never did, did not understand it nor the histogram, then I learned the histogram my exposures got better. Recently I started using ETTR and for me it is the way to go... There are some very good examples of ETTR on this thread.

I was recently in Death Valley State Park and brought my film camera along and I'll tell you. I had a blast shooting with it. It is a totally different experience then shooting digital, then again I am first and foremost an analogue guy, all my music and playback equipment is analogue still to this day. BTW I enjoyed the video clip, brought me back to Zibrisky Point..

I rarely change the White balance. I leave it on daylight nearly all the time. It works well for sunsets; I don't want to correct light in a sunset. I want it warm, orange-yellow.
If the colour balance is a little off, I correct it in Lightroom usually using one of the presets and then tweeking it slightly.
I know of no rule that says the light balance has to be "Correct." There are however two situations in which colour balance is fussy; product photography and portraiture. For many companies, the colour is part of the trademark. No model wants you to make her/him look like they are from a different race or worse from some exoplanet.

Hey Brian, I just got back from a four day trip to Death Valley State Park that is why the late replay. BTW we had a "wind event" according the the weather forecasters in that area, my but, it was an all out wind storm... continuous 20 mph up to 50 mph wind gust for four days, it was pure hell and needless to say photography was slim to none, oh well. Yeah I agree daylight balance most all the time, except for rare occasions then tweak in Lightroom when needed. At least that has been my experience.
