Is there a way to buy an upgrade from LR 5.7 to 6 and not have to buy the subscription? If so, how do I get it and how much is the upgrade?

B&H only has the full program, either disk or download.

For the upgrade you go to Adobe's site. Go to stand alone lightroom and click buy. On the next page in the cart there will be a down arrow next to the box, click and you get the choice of selecting the upgrade instead of the whole program, click upgrade, the price changes at the same time. It is a download, so save a copy to a drive or even burn a copy in case you need to do a reinstall.

http://photorumors.com/2015/04/21/here-is-the-direct-link-to-downloadupgrade-the-standalone-version-of-adobe-lightroom-6/

But in the bigger picture, this will be the last standalone, and already they are adding functionality to the subscription version that is not present in the standalone. Given that you get a complete solution with LR and PS, the subscription is a no-brainer at $10/mo or $120/yr - cheaper and better in the long run.

It maybe better and more up to date as one goes along but you are leasing the programs and don't own them. If you drop your subscription you lose the ability to use the "Develop" module in LR.

It is not a "no brainer" for someone like me who has been using Corel's "Photo Paint" and "Paint Shop Pro" since the 90's.
I am on the 30 day trial of the Photographer's CC rental and have about decided to either get the LR stand alone to keep using or get the stand alone just in case and continue with the rental for at least the full year (because the Amazon discount requires a full year) and give it more time (with some tutorials) to see if I can maybe get used to PS. I already have found some things that don't seem to be in PS or the way you do them bugs me after being used to PSP X7.
The over all loser in this is PSE 13, I use it less and less. I either go LR to PS (NIK plays better there) or LR to PSP for the features I like there. Some times I go LR to PSP back to LR or PS for NIK. It takes a little more work, but no big deal, I'm retired and have the time. Not like I am trying to get results out on a deadline for pay.
At any rate I will keep using PSP X? for the stuff it has that I like. For some things PSP is better, for some PS may be better, I will find out. Sort of like an artist who has pencils, pens, chalk, brushes and an airbrush. They all have different uses and strengths.

Yeah I agree, it is not for me.. Ive got LR6 stand alone and OnOne Perfect Photo Suite 9.5, so these two are going to work for me...the OnOne software keeps getting better every year..so No subscription here.

Subscription model is cheaper. And you can always stop using LR/PS and use something else. Leasing is just a slightly different method of ensuring cash flow, and by making it cheaper they have dramatically reduced piracy. Yes, if you do the math on the cost of "ownership" and subscription - it is considerably cheaper.

How is that Gene.. If I upgraded from LR4 to LR6 via download at $79.00 a good deal, but I wanted the standalone version so I popped for $142.00. For A one year rental at $120.00 yes I paid more, but I don't upgrade for at least two years or more..lets see standalone $142 verses $220 for two yr sub, hmm. Adobe is going to make ALLOT more money now and keep us HOOKED for ever.

Eventually with an upgrade in the OS (Windows or OS X), LR6 will stop working. No one knows when will happen, but it will happen.

Yup I am sure that will happen, by then or before I will have to commit or find something else.

As you may know, Apple has announced that they will no longer support Aperture/iPhoto. Lots of Apple users are affected by this since there will be no further updates to either of these pieces of software. Lot of them are now looking to migrate to Lightroom.

Buying the LR6 (standalone) update puts the user in the exact same boat as users of Aperture/iPhoto. No further updates.

Just food for thought.

What you wrote is correct but if you have the stand-alone version, you can decide if it is sufficient for your purposes. I had to upgrade to Yosemite (Mac OS) before I could upgrade to LR 6. Yosemite is free but other programs may need upgrading or look/operate differently. It's a domino effect. The manufacturers have you by the nose if you want to keep up w/the latest and greatest.

I'm on that same page you are!! Different strokes for different folks and that's just based on my hobbyist status as a photographer, if I were earning $$ from it I may view it differently.
