Ellen first of all, congratulations on the photo show. That sounds very exciting for you and is a testament to your excellent photo skill. But since you are posing the questions of frames and mats, I have to ask, why are you having the show to begin with. Are you simply displaying your work, then you will take the photos home and hang them back in your own house OR are you planning to hopefully find buyers for your prints? Now if you are just showing your photos and taking them home then it doesn't make a lot of difference. But if you are hoping/planning to actually SELL your lovely photo prints then doesn't it make sense to show them to the very best advantage possible.

Just yesterday I went my local Michaels and had the woman behind the framing and matting counter come up with a solution to make one of my prints really stand out. I had my own frame that I had previously purchased at the same Michaels but this woman, with design skill I do not have, put together a package of two mats in my frame. It was absolutely spectacular and really set off my photo to its best advantage. But here's the negative kicker. Had I gone that route it would have cost me $324.00. OUCH!!! That hurt a lot. I told her that was just unacceptable because of the price. So rather than a custom frame she had wanted to use and completely custom matting I chose the frame I had taken in and she had some mats, still two separate mats she used. I walked out having paid $23.00 plus the cost of my own frame which may have been $25.00 on sale at the same Michaels.

I have no idea of your budget constraints. Maybe you would be OK having all of your prints mounted for the $324.00 each price. That would be out of the question for me. But my point is if you want someone to buy your prints then you want to show them off looking their best. Just putting them into a cheap frame is not going to work well for you in my opinion.

Congratulations again and I wish you the very best of luck,

Dennis

I am taking black and whte portraits of merchants (local) for a photo show I am having in January.
Question: how do I get that film noir look, the intense balck and white on a print?
Please
Thank you

I am not a professional at all. I have only a few family reunions which I got paid for. I am doing this show of my B & W because friends and family have encouraged me to. Whenever someone needs a good phot they call me. I am essencially a writer, poet. I have been to many photo exhibits in museums and thrive on them. I am in my mid seventies ..a late bloomer you might say.

Nervous? Oh yes! But I am going to be taking B & W Shots of local merchants in our area of Brooksville, Florida. The show will be amoung many other local painters. I do have 15 black frameswith glass.
Question shoudl I go with silver ? Or B & W high contrast shots? I am not weathy so I guess you understand.

Not sure yet of the sizes... I will be going around our town and taking shots of local merchants etc ( with permission from them in writing ). I was thinking since there is not that much display wall space I will go for rectagles
perhaps 11" x 13" or what is standard in frames. the walls are painted an ordinary beige...
Do you suggest large prints? I am not going to be hanging them. The curator will do that but I will be there when he does.

Like many words “take” can have several meanings. Adams was an ‘artist’ so he used “make” meaning it was his end, just as an Elephant or Moses was the end that Michelangelo aimed for.

As a ‘Recorder’, my end is different. I use the phrase “take picture” as short for “capture the situation in a photo”, or “record the view in a photo”.

I’m sure you have seen a sign “Leave nothing but footprints; take nothing but pictures” - that doesn’t mean the park has hidden some pictures you should be looking for.

I do like your concept of "Capture a situation in a photo.." That's what a true artist ascribes for.

My City Hall has an art gallery within the walls of the office building. They agreed to give me a show of about 10 -20 framed photos. Now I need to pick up black frames and matts. I am low on funds so I need to know where to get these.
I am very excited about this. The photos will be portraits of local merchants in black and white.
If anyone has any suggestions please fell free to post.

AA may have said, "You don't take a photograph, you make it." Many of us would add "Fake it til we make it"

"You don't take a photograph, you fake it as you make it with AI"

I think what he meant was , You don't just snapa down the buttom but you make several decisions simultaneously
Angle, light, interest, and how you think it will turn out.
I think we all do that to a degree.
He got all those wondeerful memorable shots also by BEING THERE. Location, to me, is primal.

I am a native NYC girl I now live in Spring Hill Florida and I do miss the White Christmas. What I do not miss is the shoveling snow off my car again and again. I miss a wood burning fireplace of my youth in the Catkills but not the sight of homeless people freezing in the sidewalks.
The winter brings many thing to photogrpah everywhere.
What will all of you do this coming winter? What will inspire you to get the camera out and shoot?
