Thanks Bob. Are there any prime lenses you think are worth adding?

My son has just acquired an EOS-1D body, and is looking for the best range of lenses. I know nothing about Canon, so I hesitate to advise him. His budget is practically unlimited (tens of thousands), but he doesn't want to spend unnecessarily. While I think most of his shooting will be indoors, city streets and parks, he might also venture into both wildlife and macro, so you can be pretty wide-ranging in your suggestions.
Many thanks

I am building a system that will be surrounded by a grid of metal rods, to hold lighting and other accessories. For the lights I need something that can move along, and rotate round, the rod and also swivel left and right. I hope the diagram shows this clearly.

My problem is that I cannot find anything quite like this on line. It may be a problem of the site's pictures not showing precisely how the light can move in each dimension. If any of the forum members either have, or know of such a system, I would be grateful for information on where it is available.

Many thanks

I recently attended a demonstration of the Nikon D500 and they were adamant that noise was virtually no problem below 12800.

If you want cheap: one of my friends showed me this. Buy a bolt that will screw into your camera and a piece of string. Tie the string around the bolt and step on the loose end of the string. The result is surprisingly effective at reducing camera shake.

I spend much of my time with the camera on a copy stand, and don't want the carrying strap getting in the way. Any advice on a good strap that a releases quickly?

Thanks

So, after hearing from several of you about selling directly to a user, I contacted people at my club. One has two sons, both starting out, so we came to a deal for the entire package that left us both happy.

Thanks for all the replies. Generally the suggested values were higher than I expected.

I plan to trade in a Nikon D5300 (~5000 releases) a D7200 (42000 releases) and a Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5lens. What is a reasonable price range I might expect from a dealer?

For size of the steps using Stackshot, I use the chart published on the Zerene website.
One of the reasons I like Helicon Remote is you see your image on the computer. This is not just larger but also highlights in-focus parts, making indentifying the start and end positions much easier. You can also adjust camera settings onscreen, preview for exposure, and automates creating new folders for each stack.

mawyatt - Thanks for your info. I'll spend some reading up on ZS and HF and see which works for me. The Pmap and Dmap are big advantages of ZS apparently? They both give 30 day trials so that should be enough time to see which one suits me best.

MACT - Yes, I read that HR has the calculator to determine the number of shots. By getting the 'Pro' version of HF it includes Helicon Remote also which could operate my Stackshot. Seems like quite a bit of wiring though if using the Stackshot.
1 wre from Stackshot to camera, 1 wire from Stackshot to Mac (Helicon Remote) and a third wire from Helicon Remote to camera.
I'll have a read up today and see how they work out.
MACT, do you use Helicon Focus as well as HR? If so, what do you think of that?
ZS does have the dual modes (Pmap & Dmap), for varying subject matter/qualities. This seems to be a very highly rated feature?
Thanks all.
mawyatt - Thanks for your info. I'll spend some re... (show quote)

I have been happy with Helicon Remote and Focus, combined with Stackshot 3X . Both companies are very responsive to queries and ideas. Remote and Focus offer multiple options, and the chance to alter any of the parameters. One feature in Remote that is essential for me is to designate where the files will be stored, since I run out of room on the camera's SD card very quickly.

I use Helicon Remote. It will automatically determine the number of shots. You set the start and end positions and it looks at your lens and settings to calculate.

If you go the Thor route, make sure you get things with 1/4-20 threads, this is the same as the camera mounting standard. This will allow you to directly mount all kinds of camera accessories, things like flash bases, extension arms and so on......very handy and requires no drilling.
Thanks, I think this may be worth the price. I have contacted Thor for some technical details. In particular I would like to add support for lighting, flash and UV lamps.

We bought this 20 years ago and it has sat at the top of the steps all that time. I think this should be the site's logo.

Thanks. I really appreciate the suggestions. I will start with the simpler options but the Thor solution looks very promising.
The off-vertical may help with another problem. Pointing straight down means the sensor doesn't know if it is supposed to be in landscape or portrait mode, and randomly flips from one to the other!
