Tony,
I loved your photos from Antarctica! You have inspired me to try my luck with the tap-in console. I own 4 Tamron lenses so it’s got to help if only for the updated firm ware. Wish me luck!

Thanks and best luck!

I like my 18-400, bought for our trip to Antarctica during Dec. 2019 on the Nat Geo Explorer. On my D7500, it is a light and versatile walk around lens on ship or shore.. Swapping limited-zoom lenses on a Zodiac is a challenge and you can't aways quickly zoom on the surprise whale. From the ship's B&H locker, I borrowed a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens for a day. It worked great on the ship with a monopod, but I was often frustrated that is wouldn't zoom wider. Link to Flickr Collection: https://www.flickr.com/photos/tonyjag/collections/72157713758443993/
Using the tap-in adapter, I calibrated the focus, as described in an earlier UHH thread https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-604962-1.html

I have been using LR Classic since a trip to Antarctica where we took over 10K pix. But I have about 40K old pix in Aperture that I don't want to bring into LR.

I found the following:

Has anyone tried it?

An added note I am now aware that there are two companies that offer an app that will use of Aperture with recent Apple upgrades.

Thanks to all of you for giving me your time.

Carpe Diem and Cheers. Dale

Several of us are interested in "the patch" (mentioned later in this thread by xtoothdr) that allows Aperture 3.6 to run under Catalina. We would also be interested in your post regarding "two companies that offer an app that will use of Aperture with recent Apple upgrades" We would much appreciate a link or other information about them. Thanks.

There is NO OTHER SOFTWARE that allows you to zoom on 4 images side-by-side and then rank them (for future use or deletion) simultaneously.
And yes I AM RUNNING APERTURE successfully on a 2021 IMAC and Catalina---yep I'm sure. You just need the patch--which also supports all earlier versions of ITUNES.

I agree that an ultra wide angle is best used for close up work where you want to exaggerate the distance between subject and background or for interior work in tight spots. For those big vistas you’ll be seeing I would definitely be stitching shots into panoramas.

I also agree. For Antarctica with endless big vistas, I left the Sigma 8-16 non-fish-eye home and stitched together panos from18-400 on D7500 or 16-300 on D5300. With ultrawide lenses, you end up with too much sky or sea with a narrow band of interest across the middle, so heavy cropping is needed. And it is frustrating when a whale pops up in the distance and you can't zoom in on it.

I think Aperture is 64 bit, which made it particularly disapointing that Apple quit supporting it.

I used Aperture for years and still have it running under Mohave. But it's time for Catalina. Please share info about the patch you mentioned! Will it work with M1 Macs?

Thanks to all who replied so far! I will probably hold off on a new MacBook Pro until there is a 16" with M1. I also read that they are bringing back an SD slot and magsafe.

Has anyone run LR or PS on a Mac with the new M1chip, which replaces Intel? If so, please share your impressions. Is Adobe working on versions optimized for M1?

i use common brake part cleaner for cars in spray can .spray on a cloth , and wipe plastic or rubber .will not harm .good to remove goo on rubber .not for glass on lens .$ 2.00 .

Brake parts cleaner is a powerful solvent that softens some plastics. The CRC Brakleen label says: "Protect all rubber brake parts, plastic parts, rims, and painted surfaces from product and overspray....contains Acetone....and...heptanes." It's great for brakes or engines, but keep it away from cameras! Use zeiss wipes as widely recommended here, or, in a pinch, clean microfiber soaked in vodka.

Welcome to UHH! I think it records the shutter count on the SD card when you take a picture. Most camera shops have a quick means of reading it. There are probably other ways to read it as well.

I also recommend that you consider the Tamron 16-300, which is a great light weight walkaround crop sensor lens. The slightly wider view at 16mm will be useful for quilts. It is older than the 18-400, so does not work with the USB dock, but it has manual focus override, which Tamron left out of the 18-400. I also have the 18-400. Both went to Antarctica on D5300 (used by my son) and D7500 (used by me aged 76) respectively.

The Nikon 16-85 is also good.

Yes,
Using the console is the easy part. It also lets you update lens firmware without sending the lens away. See this thread for the bottom line of my experience last year while preparing for a trip to Antarctica:

It also references 2 earlier threads that are full of varied and interesting comments.
