My vote goes for number four. I find it difficult, no matter how hard I try, to get the complete orchid in focus. Seems like either the leaves are a little off, or the middle portion is. Nice job

Thanks - I tried to be careful of that. They sit the plants all over, and sometimes getting plane-on to one is hard. I was using a 50-200 and shooting in camera macro mode, so I could frame pretty well, but I still had to edit out stuff at the edges.

I love getting feedback and seeing good examples.

Dyane. I think those are darned good. I love going to the annual Orchid show here in Gainesville, but I always seem to take a shot or two of each flower and then move on to the next one. As a result, like you seem to be, I'm rarely satisfied when I get home and take a look at what I have on the computer. I always seem to have an attack of the "would'da should'da could'das. I've decided that at the next show I'm going to take a quick tour through the whole show, find the two or three best flowers and then spend the rest of my time with various combinations of composition, angles, exposure and depth of field etc on just those few blossoms. Oh yeah, I have also promised myself I will use my TRIPOD!! ......... Coot

Thanks for the comments. Oh yeah - a tripod might actually help, if they allowed it. I may see if they're leaving the orchids up during the week (they might) and if I can go back with different equipment when they're not packed to the gills. For some shows they have special photography times when you can bring tripods, but not for this one. Luckily I have some in bloom at home I can practice on :)

The ambient (natural or artificial) used in your photos is too flat, not enhancing the three dimensionality (3-D) of the flowers. Most "flower photographers" use speedlights to increase DOF,and define dimensionality of flowers.

Here is what a hand-held standard DSLR with a macro lens & simple 3/4-circle (partial ring light) can do for orchids.

I can tell you've got the experience! I didn't have a ring light, the flash I had was not what I needed, and the light in the room was much brighter than I'm used to seeing it, so I think it's a process problem. I will have to spend some time doing shots here at home and see if I can work out a system with the equipment I have.

Thanks for sharing - I'll compare mine to your technical level until I get better! It's always good to have some stunning shots to aspire to :)

#1 seems to blend into the background a little too much.

Rest are gorgeous and great shots.

#3 is frame worthy.

Thanks - I like that one too. There are so many orchids so close together at the show, it can be overwhelming - I think in #1 I should have picked a better composition.

Appreciate the comments!

Look pretty sharp for your conditions. I like 'em :) I think you've got a good eye - this is a field that takes a lot of practice.

Best wishes!

Love the Woody - I get Downy's and Red-bellied, but so far nothing else. If the weather holds, I expect some more immigrants shortly...

At the orchid show today, as much as I love the flowers, it's hard to do them justice in photographs. I have a couple here - there are more (lots more). Am I being too picky, or do they just not quite get there?

Thanks!

Well, turns out it is a $3 charge to get in - $2 for us old folks. I must not have had to pay last year because someone else did. Still a pretty cheap cost for something so pretty.
This year, they have the flowers out in the main hall, which has better lighting. I'm so amazed by all the colors - just try to match those in printing...:)

It's open to the public, and free as I remember (some of their things like the butterfly show have fees to get in). They open at 10. For the butterfly show they have photog special hours, for the orchid show they don't, and they might be fussy about tripods - not sure.

It will be crowded, and there will be judging going on so you might have to be flexible on times, but there's the whole rest of the conservatory to see too (including their orchid room).

Maybe I'll see you there :)

It's at Krohn Conservatory on Saturday 3/17/12, for those who might like to photograph some pretty flowers. Saturday is judging, the show will still be up on Sunday.

I'm game - depending on when he gets here (and he can visit with Mr. Pippin while he's here) he might go to a Renaissance Faire and hang out down by the river...
