A bigger sensor is better than a smaller sensor. Bigger pixels are better than smaller pixels. There is less space between them. Bigger sensors are much better in low light or night conditions.

If I were buying, I'd look for the biggest sensor that I could afford.

Good luck!

Actually, if you think it thru, there is more space between larger pixels. The benefit from larger pixels is the fact that they ARE larger, therefore have more info per pixel.

I rarely shoot in RAW........ I know that I'll be bashed for this.
I won't bash. I usually shoot RAW because I want a little better control of the white balance, but will not hesitate to shoot jpegs - especially if I'm using "burst" mode; I notice a lag with RAW.[/quote]

The lag you experience could be from a cheaper (slower) mem card. You have a lot of info in a RAW file, and if your card can't keep up with the transfer of data it will seem to lag. Try a UDMA card or a 60MB or 90MB transfer rate.

I would have a big problem with this. The photographer should have asked you for permission and informed you of their intent. I was always under the impression that pictures taken of people required a release to be signed (or is that more etiquette than requirement?)

Actually, Opal, pics of people taken in public venues don't require a model release unless it is to be used for commercial purposes; i.e. use it as a model for an ad campaign or a book cover, you need to have a signed release. If you sell it as a stock photo the buyer would probably request one up front, and that buyer is the one you need the model release for. If you take a pic of someone, blow it up and sell it as a print (a work of art) you would not technically need a release; but if possible it would probably be prudent to get one in case your prints sell for 1000's of dollars. It would help cut down the hassles in case the subject wanted money for the use of his/her visage :P !

I appreciate the fact this has likely been discussed prior.

Mentally, My Canon Rebel XSI requires a technology upgrade.
Would someone post the pro & con of Full DSLR format vs reduced format as in my XSI. What is lost in the reduced format e.g. 7D or 60D.
BTW I plan to walk the hallowed ground of the L lens, at last!
Thank You for your time

Firstly, your Rebel and the 7D or 60D all share the same size CMOS sensor; so the quality of any single picture you take will pretty much depend on your lense selection and your own abilities :-D ! Now, if your price line is around 1400 bucks, or less, your selections will be limited to APS-C size sensors if you only consider new; but you can expand your selection if you can consider refurbished or used cameras. You may find a canon 1ds mk1 for around a grand or so. What you really need to do is think about what you are looking for in a camera. Then you can concern yourself with sensor size if that becomes important. If speed is a concern, a 7D can take pics faster than any full frame in your price range. Want to take videos and stills, 7D or 60D fits the bill. Inclement weather, 1Ds (refurb) or 7D (if not too bad of conditions). You need to cruise dpreview.com or other such sites to understand the pros and cons of the various cameras you are considering. As you can see from the responses to your simple  question, there is much to consider. Hope this helps.

Hey, alaskanfrog, all digital cameras DO NOT use CCD sensors. Quite a few if not most use CMOS sensors. Canon uses mostly CMOS, as does Nikon, Sony uses both, Olympus uses ccd/live MOS, leica uses both etc. Just saying...

Where is this shot? I scoured the thread but didn't find any lodge. :?: :-(

...from your post, duh.

Just about perfect:

So call it a lodge, call it a log cabin, call it a rustic retreat. But I was commenting on your own posting

Here is one that is more along realistic. 13 exposures.

I beg to differ. There is obvious processing here. In my opinion, this is an example of pushing the envelope on the tonemapping. I've seen the process go way past this so it's not to say that this isn't close, just no cigars. Here are a couple that get closer to realistic. Again, just my opinion. Thanks for listening. Kirk

When do you need a model release?

Do I need one if I use a picture of some ones dog?

What if I take a picture of a dog in a contest and the handler is in the picture?

Can I use the pictures in my portfolio if they are not for sale?

This should answer your questions on model releases; it's well worth the short read...

Anybody in favor of Term Limits for all politicians?

We have term limits. It's called the vote. Exercise it on a regular basis, and you will end career politicians. Laziness has caused many, if not most, of our problems. We need statesmen, not politicians; and if you cannot see the distinction, you are part of the problem. Also, when you go wagging that finger at someone, remember there are 3 more pointing back at you.

With all due respect, I totally disagree with you on this.
quote=beacher quote=Fstop12 br Anybody in favor... (show quote)

What exactly is it that you disagree with?

Regular and judicious use of your vote to limit how often someone is elected...

or laziness in just accepting the status quo, vote the party line, thinking your vote doesn't make a difference, not being aware of just what the issues are...

knowing the difference between a politician (...a seeker or holder of public office, who is more concerned about winning favor or retaining power than about maintaining principles...) and a statesman (...a person who exhibits great wisdom and ability in directing the affairs of a government or in dealing with important public issues...)...

or, when pointing a finger at me, 3 of your own fingers are curled back pointing at you...

Ya ever think the reason for bullseyes is fairly simple... the sweet spot in the viewfinder is dead center. Now, if they just made the default setting to the left (or right, for us conservatives), they would automatically follow the rule of thirds!!!!

You CAN setup your AF and exposure meter that way - check the manual !

yep, know that. was recognizing the fact that too many just pick up the camera and start pushing the button. they never RTFM...
