After spending most of an afternoon trying to get into an Adobe chat room, finally arousing someone, waiting 10 minutes between questions and responses, I finally get an answer to my question,"why can't I import images from a memory card into LR". The answer, "this is a known problem we are working to fix". C'mon man! No one tried to import image from a memory card into LR during development and beta testing of Catalina? Unbelievable!

I have similar problem but only with the Z7 and converting to dig. The download is fast but the conversion freezes.

Running latest Lightroom CC on new MacBook Pro - the smaller version for travel with 16gb memory and Catalina. I typically download and convert the Nef files to DnG. Downloading from Z6 works fine and is very fast. The download from Z7 is fast also but the conversion to Dng is impossibly slow. So slow 5 minutes converts 3 photos. I know the files are larger but that can’t be the problem. Runs fine on my iMac. Seems like the Z7 files get sent to a different processor. Any advice is appreciated.

Nice! What gives the the rock its burgundy colour?
It is the type of stone, which I have forgotten. Same as the Maroon Peaks than Ansel Adams made famous in BW. It is a soft stone and so climbers stay away.

I was on a NG Photo Expedition last November in Japan. 14 people total. 1 Sony shooter, 2 Nikon shooters, 1 iPhone shooter, 10 Canon shooters. The pro was shooting Canon's latest 50mp camera. The rest all appeared to be shooting what normal people shoot, midrange, few full frame sensor cameras. And FYI, the lead pro is a pretty famous guy. He shoots raw+jpg and downloads the jpgs to an iPad Pro and edits on the go. He is a believer in pushing the ISO and worrying about it later.

Not to argue but wondering if you saw this and what you think of it. Says Nikon is playing the long game.
Matt Irwin on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoNblgRmhOI. Makes the argument that the Z lens mount is better for technical reasons. Beyond my pay grade.
Cheers,

Sorry, wrong link. This one is about the mount technology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuKWWIOoIfE

If you use aperture priority then you will need to use exposure compensation to raise the exposure a stop or two to avoid getting gray or blue snow. I am wondering is a circular polarizing filter could reduce glare like on water.

Our buddy Jimmy Chin has a nice high-level explanation here: https://www.masterclass.com/articles/what-is-lens-diffraction-in-photography#what-causes-lens-diffraction. Note, there is a relationship between pixel size and pixel density of the camera that is separately related to experiencing diffraction, beyond the more 'traditional' issue of light waves interfering with each other as they pass through a small opening (aperture) at the back of the lens.

CHG Canon, thanks for posting this link. I read it and it confused me with one expression. It mentions large and small megapixel sensors. I cannot tell if he means a large number of pixels, or if the pixels are each larger or smaller.

For example, you can get a full frame sensor with 50 mega pixels, or you can get a medium format sensor with the same number of pixels. Seems like since the number is the same but the real estate is different, the pixel sizes would be different. I have read to think of the pixels as buckets of light. Larger pixels equals more light, so better low light performance. True?

Apart from the impact of the aperture setting on the diffraction, seems like larger pixels would relatively, show less in diffraction similar to micro blur. Too many pixels make them smaller, and therefor the relative blur seems enhanced. True?

Wondering if this is a rationale for a medium format sensor?

I don't think it matters except for the following:
I would want my fastest card as primary.
I like to remove my cards and use a card reader for transfer instead of using a cable to the camera body and the CF card seems more robust for removal over and over.

Agree with comments above with one caveat - Check the default settings. If you take video that camera may default to put the video on the CF card.

Since installing Catalina I've had nothing but problems. New one surfaced yesterday and I can't seem to fix it. I was reorganizing my folder system getting ready to move on to 2020, when LR lost track of my folders. Yes, I was doing the reorg from within LR. Simply wanted a few folders under another folder. Now when I try to import, no matter which folder I try to import to, LR picks the same folder and says it is not available so will use my Pictures folder instead, which I do not want. My images are all on an external drive in a pretty good set of folders and structures. I tried to move things back to where they were, but that did not work. I tried deleting the folder that LR goes to, but it still tries to go there and now it is correct, that folder is not available. How can I redirect LR to import to other folders? I have been hesitant to try and fix this in the Finder. EDIT I should have added that LR tries to go to the same folder even though the destination show correctly in the lower right box. I also tried to change the destination in the default auto import preference, but this did nothing. And I checked the file structure in the Finder and it matches the structure in LR. LR just seems stuck importing to the same folder and ignores me when I tell it to import to another folder. EDIT 2 Sorry for all the babble, but I was able to get it to import to the chosen folder. Now it seems LR has a lock on the error message. When I hit ok, and ignore that it says it will use the Pictures file, it actually saves the import to the folder as selected in the Destination. So how do I get rid of the error message? If I use a different catalog, it is not there. Does this mean the problem is in the Cat file?

It worked out great as it has top access without opening the flap. I do like it a lot.
It should fit under an airplane seat also as long as you don't over-stuff it.
BUT, if you have anything small, like keys, if you don't put them in one of the zippered pockets, they can fall out when the bag is turned upside-down, like at airport security screening...
The top is a flap and does not seal (by zipper) on the sides.

I carried two spare batteries, battery charger, a filter pouch, angle finder, 50mm lens and the camera with an 18-200mm lens. Plus little stuff in the zipper pouches.

So I am looking for a travel bag that will handle camera gear for a trip but also have room for other things. I have a camera bag and another back pack but I am looking for one bag that will do both for a River Cruise this spring. Will be traveling light as possible with camera equipment but still needs protection. Would like room for other things too in this bag as carrying two bags on air plans is not practical.

Any suggestions for a combo pack?

Thanks
Keith Kittinger

If you are flying be sure it meets the size and weight criteria. Weight is checked at a lot of international flights. Google carry on restrictions for your airline. Edit - I meant to add that Manfrotto has a nice back pack with compartments and it meets the size limits for a carry on. It also has a matching shoulder bag that meets the accessory size limits. I think they are called "Manhattan".

A photographer friend, who shoots mostly portraits, recommended Photo Mechanic. She uses the software to cull her photos before she uploads them to Light Room. Any other users out there? I am trying to put together a workflow for myself that makes more sense than my current workflow that seems to have more steps than needed. One of my biggest challenges is that I take waaaaay to many pictures during a portrait session and I am wondering how helpful photo mechanic would be in my culling process. Thanks for the input.

I have tried it recommended by a NG Photog in a class I took. It is definitely a fast system for culling your images. If you are working to a deadline or racing other photogs it can be helpful. However, I do not use it on a regular basis as it puts another step in the process. Cull in PM, then export and import to LR. I just go straight to LR with minimum set for the preview and with my new computer it moves pretty fast.

I have never used a physical stabilizer for this lens. I shoot a lot of sports and indoor event photography using a gimbal head on my tripod and have never felt the need for anything other than the mount that comes with the gimbal because the images are as sharp as can be. By the way, I do make certain that the VR is turned off.

Hmm? VR off when on a loose gimbal head? I typically assume there will be some minor movement so I keep the speed up and use the VR. Only off when I lock down.
