Lightroom issue with new laptop

Running latest Lightroom CC on new MacBook Pro - the smaller version for travel with 16gb memory and Catalina. I typically download and convert the Nef files to DnG. Downloading from Z6 works fine and is very fast. The download from Z7 is fast also but the conversion to Dng is impossibly slow. So slow 5 minutes converts 3 photos. I know the files are larger but that can’t be the problem. Runs fine on my iMac. Seems like the Z7 files get sent to a different processor. Any advice is appreciated.

So I understand your workflow, you are importing nef files to your laptop and making a dng copy.

You are keeping your original nef files, aren't you?

Are you using lossless compressed 14 bit raw files on each?

How much ram does your iMac have?

Why are you making dng copies when the Z7 is supported on Lightroom CC v2.0?

I use to convert my nef files to dng, not anymore. If you continue with this , keep a copy of your nef files on a sepperate drive. Sorry don't own a mac & do not have this problem. Processor is probably the bottle neck. Try call Adobe or Apple.

Unless you have a clear reason to do the conversion, stop doing it! I don't see how your workflow, quality will be negatively impacted. Your computer and Lightroom certainly won't care when you open a NEF instead of a DNG.

Yep... I’d convert to DNG ONLY for long term storage of my most important originals — AFTER all my editing is done. And I’d still keep the raw files.

How are you using the term "raw"?
My Pentax cameras create "DNG" as 'raw'.

That's true, Pentax and Leica allow DNG as their native RAW, but most UHH'ers are as usual only thinking Canon, Nikon, Sony. Pentax also has their own RAW, PEF. I see little difference between PEF and DNG from my Pentax bodies. The file sizes are different though.
