The more I read about using a large format camera, the more excited I'm getting about this project. Apparently the camera has been in the family for several years, being negelcted for several years by my moms cousin...until her brother found out he had it and rescued it from a wet environment. He kept it in a dry but didn't do anything with it. He eventually gave it to my mom (who was a photographer back in the 70-80s), and when she found out I was shooting film again, mentioned to me that she had this out in Arizona.

Morning All,
Not sure if this is the right "topic" page but I thought I'd start here. I am a photographer and work for a catalog company and I am looking for someone to photograph birds. It's a very specific kind of shooting and we simply don't have the time. Are there any bird photographers out there that would be interested in some work?

Check my website,

You don't know me so don't be upset about my critiques as I have been told I can be 'tactless'.
I hope, in time, your photographs will improve because of input like mine and from others as well.

There are three elements that make a photograph successful: Theme, Composition and, of course, Exposure. Without all three, a photograph loses it's appeal. What you have here is a snapshot that causes the viewer's eye to wander, in other words, there is no 'Subject' to capture their attention.
Although you suggest having a 'person' in the shot is a positive thought to putting someone in the image to maybe improve on it, you have to ask yourself, "Would that person be the Theme or Subject in the photograph?"
The reflections neither improve nor detract from the image. In fact, they play little if any on the output. You seem to have been interested in the light fixtures (?), blow dryers on stilts (?) as your point of interest but didn't really grasp the viewer because of Composition, or better said, attention to them.
About the only thing I can say, and again, this is only my opinion so don't place any weight upon it, is that you DID get the Exposure well.
It could be a very interesting abstract perhaps if composed differently (?).

and now I'll sit back and get slapped by the rest of the members.

I have owned my 1430 for about a year now and I have had a great experience with the quality of the prints. I also still run an Epson 700 and an 810 model and use 3rd party ink in all of my printers for over 3 years now and have had no bad issues at all. this is where I get my ink from if you are interested. http://continuousbulkinksupplysystems.com I calibrate my monitor and printer using a Colormunki system and my Lightroom prints match the monitor nicely.
Also Epson has the 1430 Refurb for 199.00. To find it on the Epson site you must enter in the search box (Refurished 1430) or you won't find it.
Good luck Frank this is my 2 cents worth.

Thank you for the reply, I'm always wary of off brand inks, but will check the link and maybe try some in my Epson 800. And off I go to check out the refurbished 1430

I have a 1430 and have been more than happy with it. it makes beautiful prints and it's pretty tough. My house flooded last August and right before we evacuated, I put it in the attic hoping that the water wouldn't reach it. We only got 3 feet in the house and it sat in the attic for over five months while I rebuilt the house. South Louisiana heat and humidity, not to mention construction dust in the air. I took it down about a week ago, cleaned it up, and ran a print head cleaning cycle and guess what, it works like a brand new one still!
Epson also has some of the best customer service I've ever dealt with.

I've also been a happy Epson owner for many years, but I'm not a blind follower, sometimes things change so I always try to do good research, Thanks for your reply.

I have an Epson 1400 which is the older model and similar. Have used it for years and it gives great prints and is problem free. I use Precision refillable ink cartridges with Precision inks. I say buy the Epson and you will be happy with it. Use Precision inks to keep ink costs down.

I'll check out the Precision inks, love to save a few dollars when I can, but only if my prints don't suffer for it.
I can practice on my old Epson printer.
Thanks for the tip.

A few thoughts on the 1430 purchase. I have the Artisan 50, a smaller version of the 1430, same ink, different cartridges. About six months ago I purchased a Pro 100 from Craigslist. Since I have two Epson photo printers and a lot of Epson paper on hand, I decided to do some print testing with my two dye ink printers.

On the same sheet of paper I make a 5x7 print from each printer, using the basic icc profiles that come with each printer for that type of paper. The test image is one used to test printer capabilities, it's calibrate by the maker and requires no adjustment. The Image has a color checker, gray scale and a colorful portrait of a woman. Test prints were compared at my viewing station with 5000k lighting. Test were done on glossy, luster Epson and Canon papers. The matte test was only on Epson paper. Overall the prints were identical. The Epson made prints were just slightly darker on both Epson and Canon glossy and luster papers. The matte test on Epson paper was interesting. Canon has three matte paper profiles, two looked identical to the Epson print. The print using the Canon pro premium matte profile turned out slightly yellowish. Also discovered that printer profiles in the opposite printers don't turn out well.

So here, I think is the consideration; do I buy the Epson 1430 for around $300 or the Canon Pro 100 from B&H
for $130 after rebate and maybe even another set of ink for $125 for a total of $255?

I should note; I purchased the Canon printer for two reasons, the price and the theory that a printer with more that one monochrome ink will produce better black and white print. I have yet to see the difference with these two printers. Both turn out a beautiful black and white prints.

Good information to know, I sometimes think that with the quality of probably all available printers, we couldn't buy a really bad one, although the cost of ink is a real consideration.
Thanks for your contribution.

I've had a 1430 since shortly after Epson replaced the 1400 with it - a little more that 3 years ago. I was running Win7 at the time, but have since transitioned to Win10 without issue. I am very pleased with the prints I make with it from 4x6" to 13x19". The Epson ink can be expensive, but I watch for sales on the Epson site and from various office stores. I've also bought from eBay, but only those that come in Epson original boxes with current Best By dates. I only use Epson paper and have the appropriate 1430 Epson paper ICC files loaded in Lightroom.

Although I don't print photos all that often, I have had no problems with nozzle clogging or banding in my prints. I do use it for my normal printing chores such as boarding passes, etc., and once turned on, I leave it on for the rest of the day.

My only issue has been that about a year ago I started having problems with the wireless connection which caused me to waste several sheets of 11x14" paper and ink. It would print about 2/3 of the way on a page of large paper and then stop, with no way to get it to print what remained. So I switched over to USB and have not had any issues. I would buy it again in a minute, or whatever Epson is offering as a comparable replacement in the future.

Epson is #1 printer on my list of the best. I had a 1400 printed with a CISS for 3 years then the pads went bad. Now I bought a Epson WF7610 7610 all in one, wide format. My best buy of over 50 prints for only $160. I put a CISS on it for $35. but ebay has replacement ink for $20. a set. When you buy a printer also look at the ink cost before you buy.

The replacement ink you buy on e-bay for 20.00 a set, is that Epson ink ?
Please explain, what is CISS ?
Thank you for your response.

PS I buy my ink directly from Epson. Two reasons 1) If you put your self on the mailing list they have sales. I always buy enough to have a complete replacement set at home. 2) If you have a problem they are good and they can see that you buy Epson ink and that they can't say the problem is non Epson refill inks.

I always use the Epson ink & paper, that usually eliminates many problems before they even get started.
Thanks

I have the Epson 1430 and use it with Windows 10. I print a variety of sizes from 4x6 to 13x19 on a variety of papers. I use only Epson ink and am very pleased with the results. I've had no problems with the printer. I can not compare it to any other brand of printer but have been well satisfied with Epson products.

Awesome, that's what I wanted to hear, thank you very much.

I have the 1430. It is a fine printer. I had the 1400 and gave it to a friend, it is still working fine. I only replaced it with the 1430 because the 30 is wireless and can use it on any of the families computer.

I've had my 1430 about 2yrs and am fairly satisfied. I use Win 10 and the wireless function with no problem.
My main complaint is that the printer must be used regularly to avoid clogged heads and irregular color bands.
Colors are bright and with good resolution. Not a bad printer for the money.

Thank you for the reply, all the good comments I've received has put my mind at ease.
