I know exactly what you mean! I too have to know the who, what, when where and why of things. The first thing I wanted to do was to get the high resolution on my camera. I had to search in the manual for that.
I found "A Beginner’s Guide To Photography" site helped to learn some basics.
http://www.expertphotography.com/a-beginners-guide-to-photography It helped alot.
At first I changed all the settings and couldn't get a clear picture. Then I ended up taking notes when I changed the settings on my camera (menu button on my camera for each shooting mode) and writing down on paper the description and setting of the shot so I would know which setting I used for the shot. Otherwise you have lots of pictures and don't know which setting you used! Learning a new camera is not fun. I'm learning lots here. Everyone is very helpful.

I have seen nature photos with the object clear and the background and foreground out of focus. How do I create this image. I am a newbee and after several disappointments just recently learned how to create clear pictures. My new camera is a FukiFilm HS 20 EXR. I have taken SEVERAL photos but I'm still learning the camera. I am just playing around at the moment. I intend to photograph nature and want to get it right when I try.

My last camera (over ten years old) busted, now I have the Fujifilm HS20 EXR camera. At first I was going to return it because I couldn't get a clear picture. I changed many settings and finally got a few clear pictures. I'm not sure what I did to get these pictures. The fountain pictures show something different. One shows the water fall the other shows the water drops???? Don't know what settings I used. I'm just glad they are fairly clear.
Also can you help me. I am trying to figure out how to get a clear image with the background out of focus? Not sure how to do this? I'm just playing around on these pictures. Definately a new bee!
