Your public transportation is better than the USA and you drive less than Americans. Not that this is an excuse, but I believe if the US had better public transportation we would drive less and save petrol and as someone pointed out our SUV's add up to some of the fuel consumption. The low prices of fuel in the past and the availability of reasonably priced vehicles prompted people out of cities and towns into the rural suburbs which caused the dynamics of our economic system to depend on private transportation to a greater extent than it did in Europe, but it did come at a price and that is hitting us now in the form of fuel dependency, pollution and our ties to the oil producing nations.

Same thing happened to my wife and me with our two grandkids. We took them out and the parents did not like it, but as I told the parents, what is the difference if we took them out shopping or had to go to the doctors or hospital with them, don't you trust our driving?

Bummer, that would be one good reason to upgrade to the A77 or A99.

One thing I forgot to mention, have you upgraded the version to 1.05 which came out in March of this year? It is supposed to improve focusing issues.

Have you tried fine tunning the AF? I own the A77 but the menu should be the same and it is called AF Micro Adj to tune the lens for optimal focus.

I own the A77 and belong to a Sony group on Yahoo and someone just posted this link
http://www.flickr.com/groups/sonycameraclub/discuss/72157631592093240/

I have owned the A77 for two years and have not experienced any of the defects they mention.

Not on all models like the RS-100 and RS1.

I have an Olympus E PL1, I paid about 650, but then added a 150mm lens so it came to 790ish and I really love it. I have in a previous life lugged around an SLR and this is so much easier. It has a much faster sensor than most $100 point and shoot cameras.

I hear the Sony has the same fast sensor the Digital SLR's have.

Advice to the OP, before you make up your mind on what was said here, research each camera online reviews and if posible go to a camera store and handle the cameras then make up your mind.

Seems like a nice camera, is this a full DSLR or bridge camera?

I have been using m4/3 for about 2 years. I have the Lumix G1 with the 14-45mm & 45-200mm & Ilove that they are small & light compared to the full size Nikon/Cannons. I have several old Nikon manual lenses that I can use with an adapter if I want a faster lens. I use them sparingly as my old eyes are not what they use to be & the weight of the old lensed almost negate the size of the camera.

I am very happy with the picture quality of the Lumix system.

You forgot the Sony RX-100 which is in the OP price range. I have this camera as a carry around all the time pocket camera and love it, it has a range of features and is 20.3 megapixles.

Wow, that looks like a cool machine. Does it have a clip on viewfinder?

I wonder why the aren't making mirrorless cameras with the DX or FX sensors yet? That seems to me to be a logical progression to get the low noise performance of those sensors with the elimination of the mechanical shutters and mirrors.

I'm not sure that the 4/3 cameras eliminate the mechanical shutter...but if not it seems like they should. I presume they can get the same or faster effective shutter speeds electronically. Or maybe there is some limitation on getting fast shutter speeds?

They certainly use electronic shutters for video. I assume the DSLRs do that also for video...but don't know for sure.

They are making mirrorless with APS-C and full frame.
Fuji X Pro1 and XE-1. APS-C. (rumours of FF coming)
Sony NEX7. APS-C.
Sony RX1. Full Frame.
Mostly with focal plane (electronic) shutters.
