PB zoo is noted for it's huge trees and consequent low light/shadows that challenge.

I wanted to test a older Tokina 80-200 f2.8 with a Sigma 1.4X extender that I have with the Sony A77II. I really do not recommend extenders in low light - as the ISO goes necessarily high when compared to using Sony's Clear Image Zoom - but I really wanted to see how well the Tokina and Sigma worked together.

Fun set Larry! Cool Otter shot.

Phil, the eye makes all the difference. For sure this is a Red Shouldered Hawk. The yellow eye is the key for me and now in the future in addition to feather patterns I will look the bird in the eye to see if there is a difference.

Thank you for the education.

Greg

The important thing is you got good shots and you might have a regular visitor. When the find food the often return.

Thanks, Phil, for your comments. Can you tell me what the difference is between the two? In my reference books there is nothing that tells me nothing that would make me think of one hawk over the other. I always attempt to ID birds and some insects or ask for help when I capture something new and I am just wondering what I missed.

Phil, thank you again for stopping by and I will do furture investigating myself to maybe see a difference between the two.

Greg

Greg I have had a lifetime of confusion and mistaken IDs in the birding world. Cooper's and Sharp-shinned hawks (genus Accipiter) typically have orange to red eyes, blunter head shape, longer tails with wider banding. Your photos show more of the genus Buteo, (Red-tail and Red-shoulder) field marks to my eye. There are many good birders here, hopefully they will weigh in.

Phil.....often wrong and always in doubtl

Went out early to the blind to beat the heat, I almost did. Was set up for hummers when I saw this large bird land around 65 feet from me. Focused the Canon 6Dii wth the Canon L 100-400 Vii and a Canon L TC 1.4 Viii. Expecting a crow was surprised to see the Coopers Hawk on the ground and feeding. I was using a tripod with remote shutter. All details will be with each photo. ALL C&C is welcome. The first photo was used to aid identification.

Very nice work Greg. It is great when they come to your blind. I'm with Donna here, it looks more like a member of the Buteo group (probably a Red-shouldered hawk) than an Accipiter. The important thing is you caught her in the act!

Initially, I ID'd 'Love Wildlife's ' photo as an American Bittern. I was wrong! (Gulp!) I based it on my own which I captured two weeks back. Earlier, I had also captured a green heron. Bittern sitings are somewhat uncommon because of their location close to the ground and by shallow waterways. They never roost in trees whereas green herons might. ( Not a wildlife expert, just getting it right this time,Thanks to my friends at UHH. ha,ha)

Just some of the ones in my yard. Feel free to add some of your own to this post.

Fun set Hal! If these are all in your yard...you live in a mighty fine neighborhood.

We went to the beach yesterday and saw a juvenile Red Tail Hawk grab this squirrel. Crows were trying to take it from him so he stayed by us and let me get some photos. Unfortunately the squirrel was pregnant. Nature can be cruel.

Excellent series Terri! Fine work, thanks for posting.

Nicely captured. I had the occasion to see the effects of the wildfire smoke in Yosemite NP in July and got a couple of photos of the Sun through the smoke. If interested, here is one: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/42357736780/in/album-72157700439244245/.

A view from the Visitor Center looking east towards the Wasatch Mountains. The paved causeway is 7.2 miles long and is the connecting artery between the mainland and Antelope Island. Birding is popular along the causeway and as the fall migration begins, tens of thousands of shorebirds, waterfowl etc. will feed on the Salt Lake's brine shrimp before continuing southward.

On a normal day, you could easily see the mountains and distant mainland shoreline. However, smoke from the numerous western wildfires has severely limited visibility and created health advisories for most of the summer.

The high rise structure is a bird feeding platform.

Very beautiful, Phil, but wouldn't want the stress of being so close to the fires. I hope all is well at your home.

Thank you Donna. All is well here, but as I mentioned to Mike, some early fall rains will be very welcome!
