I'm about to purchase an $800 camera. Any opinions as to buying extended warranty? They're under $100 for drop and spill protection, but reviews on these are scary. Are any companies better than others. I didn't have one on my Sony a6000 when it took a swim and regret it. Thanks in advance.

My son used to work in the Beverly Hills store of a large West Coast electronics chain. When he saw that extended warranties were the chain's most profitable items, he became adept at selling them. Eventually, he led the chain in extended warranty sales, although he would never buy one himself.

Most profitable for the seller probably means not a good deal for the consumer.

The only extended warranty that I always buy is for Macs.

Otherwise, I follow my son's advice.

As someone else said, Nikon no longer makes scanners. Mine is a Coolscan V. Slow but does great work and also does roll film. Plenty of Nikon scanners available on eBay at various prices.

I've scanned with at least a half dozen scanners during the past ten years using VueScan software. Inexpensive, available on both Windows and Mac platforms, can handle just about any scanner past or present and is constantly being updated. Highly recommended!

I've kept a copy of the Picasa download programme on my hard drive in case I change computers in the future.

As far as I know it'll always be available for download, somewhere, but why not save yourself a copy just in case?

The only programme that I have seen that comes close is Xn View and Fast Stone image viewer but nothing is as good as Picasa! Why they
stopped developing it I cannot understand..........many of us would pay for it - it's that good!!!!

Thank you for replying. I currently have no trouble with Picasa, but am concerned that it might not work on a future new Mac (with an upgraded operating system). I'm now using Yosemite which is probably as high as my aging Mac should go.

I agree with you about Picasa being a great go-to application and don't understand why Google stopped supporting it.

Furthermore, I really liked Google's online Picasa photo storage service which they have (again inexplicably) moved to the much worse Google Photos.

I've used the Picasa app for years because it has a quick and easy function to adjust image angle. I just move a "slider" to see the angle adjustment.

Eventually, I'll replace my aging iMac after which I may lose Picasa.

Question: what other applications have easy angle adjustments?

Thank you.

Back in high school I used to wonder why some Spotmatics were Honeywell and some where Asahi!
SS

Because Honeywell was the official US distributor for Asahi Glass. Cameras sold in Asia were Asahi.

Lt Dan? Did you go the PX route? I was able to order a Nikon F black body, with standard prism for $125 in 66/Vietnam. That was more than a half months pay then. Wish I had kept it, lot of memories…

I bought mine in Singapore, December 1969.

I first grew that mustache in 1968. Although the Army made it allowable in March of that year, I had to shave it four times during my two-year career, even though I was an officer.

Came across this 1969 image of me making a critical military decision-what camera to buy during my upcoming R&R in Singapore.

Eventually, I settled on a Pentax Spotmatic with f/1.4 lens which I got for US$130 (the dollar was king then), leaving enough money to buy wide angle and telephoto lenses, a Rollei flash and a Gossens handheld light meter.

For me, the choice between a traditional camera and a cellphone boils down to ergonomics and control. The camera wins every time.

I never leave home without a full-control fixed lens camera, either a small Canon S95 or a more capable Lumix DMC-LX100.

Different strokes…

Either upload your black-and-white file or else paste in a URL of your picture if it's online.

Algorithmia gave pretty decent results on this 1948 scanned black-and-white snapshot.

I think that others have had this problem. Otherwise, I love the camera.

It's back at Panasonic repair.

Panacare fixed the problem—overall down time was less than three weeks.

I own an LX100. Bought it for seven and change.

Wonderful compromise between the small sensor point-and-shoots and the heavy DLSRs. It's become my every day camera. Highly recommended.
