"Yosemite Valley, to me, is always a sunrise, a glitter of green and golden wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space. I know of no sculpture, painting or music that exceeds the compelling spiritual command of the soaring shape of granite cliff and dome, of patina of light on rock and forest, and of the thunder and whispering of the falling, flowing waters. At first the colossal aspect may dominate; then we perceive and respond to the delicate and persuasive complex of nature."

Here's a glowing report on the 18-55mm kit lens that comes on the Fuji XT-20. As LoneRangerFinder has pointed out, it has OIS so you don't need in-camera stabilization when using it.

I really like the retro layout of the Fuji cameras and their line of lenses seem to be excellent according to the reviews. However I voted with my dollars and went with the Sony A6000 and eventually the very fine Sony 18-105 mm lens. I've never regretted my choice. Here's a good comparison of the 2 cameras you are interested in:

My questions to you are is this a symptom of dying batteries or perhaps something else is going on? Or is this normal behavior for the Sony a6000?

The A6000 is an excellent little camera and the only complaint I have with it is poor battery performance. I can usually get a full day out of 1 or 2 batteries depending on how much use it gets that day. I will rarely shoot 285 photos in one day so one battery is usually sufficient. But the rule is ALWAYS TAKE A SPARE. And a fully charged battery in my camera sitting on the shelf unused for a week will typically discharge around 25% over that period. So it does use a lot of battery power for all of that great technology. In your case, the usage seems abnormally high. Either your batteries are approaching their end life or your settings are putting an unusually high drain on your batteries. I've followed this topic of short battery life for a couple of years and it is a common complaint on that camera. And I have never read of a satisfactory solution. I have 2 A6000's so I've been hoping Sony would release a firmware update that would address this issue but no luck so far. If you find a solution please let us know. Leaving the camera stored with Airplane Mode On seems to provide some relief. And not using AF-C is a great idea.

I was a big fan of Fats Domino as a teenager. Years later I saw him put on a great show at the Rhein-Mein Officer's Club in the late 60's. He sang all of his favorites and was just a great showman and a fantastic piano player. On his break between sets he walked over to the bar and ordered a WATER GLASS full of whisky and drank the whole thing down in a matter of minutes while visiting with his fans. I've never seen anyone put away that much whiskey in just a few minutes in my entire life, and I've been in a few bars. His real name was Antoine Dominique Domino Jr. and his New Orleans home was completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Long live rock and roll.

...I want a fixed length lens that I can use as my "main" or "primary" lens. I think I will look around for a 50 and a 35.

After all the suggestions given, you are on the right track with your choice above. I have the 50mm and the 35mm and love both of them. Because my camera is a crop sensor, I prefer the 35mm 1.8 for my prime lens. It's inexpensive, perfect for low-light situations, gets excellent reviews, and is small and compact making it a perfect "walk-around" lens. The 35mm will give you the perspective of a 50mm on a crop sensor camera like the one you have.

Price is usually a consideration when buying your first digital camera. Since you are on a tight budget I would recommend the excellent entry-level Nikon D3300 with the 18-55mm kit lens. It gets excellent reviews from most reviewers and B&H Photo has an excellent price on this camera and lens right now making it a perfect choice for your needs. At $446 it is a fantastic bargain.

Can you post a photo of the lens and filter. I am trying to visualize how the threads on the filter could get damaged and the threads on the lens not be damaged...

The B&W thread ring is made out of brass. Under most conditions brass is softer than aluminum. It's not hard to accept the possibility that the B&W filter threads would absorb more damage than the aluminum threads on the lens. The softer brass threads on the B&W filters also make it easier to remove the filter if it had been over-tightened when it was installed.

I have a B&H or Hoya UV filter on all of my lenses because I would much rather clean the front surface of a filter than clean the front element of the lens element every time there is a bit of dust or contaminant on it. Most UV filters are also designed to reduce haze. $20 is a small price to pay for protecting my expensive lenses. For those who say a filter will degrade your image, I have seen no valid evidence that any such degradation is significant. In any case, I don't expect to have any of my priceless masterpieces on display at the Louvre any time in the future so I don't worry about that.

The 18-55 with VRII is an excellent lens. I use it 95% of the time for a walk-around lens.

If you are expecting a valuable package and are concerned you can't be home to pick it up, you have an option to have the package delivered to your closest UPS store where you can pick it up at your leisure. You need to sign up for a UPS account to have that option.

As an aside, I prefer UPS to FedEx. The last package I received from FedEx had a new lens and some other items in it and when the delivery guy threw it on my front porch with me standing there, I saw the package had been badly crushed and one end was totally torn off the package. I feared the worst and pointed that out to the delivery guy. He said he couldn't do anything about it and if I refused delivery he would send it back to B&H. So I opened the package with him standing there irritated that I was taking up his time. I inspected every item and there was no damage to anything. The new lens in it's box did not have a mark on it. I was lucky. I've never had a problem like that with UPS. However I suppose that could happen with either carrier.
