I just purchased my first DSLR. I have a D7200. I am still learning to use the camera. I also purchased a 70 - 300 lens. I shoot anything and everything. Nature, Portrait and love shooting live concerts usually indoors. Any suggestions on a lens to use as a prime or do I stay with what I have until I learn the camera? The lens is not a kit lens, they were bought seperately.

You need something wider. A 50mm f/1.8 would be nice. Or, you could spend three times as much for an f/1.4.

You need something with a faster aperture - I like the Sigma 50-150 f2.8.

Great, Thank You. I was looking at refurbished glass from Nikon and the 50mm did catch my eye.
Thanks again

Because of the 1.5 crop factor, a 35 mm lens would give you a “normal” field of view.

Many photographers like 35 mm on a full frame camera so a 24 mm lens would give you the same result on your camera.

In either case, get the FX version of the lens and you will still have something you can use if you ever get a full frame camera.

On a crop sensor camera like the D7200, a 35mm f/1.8 would be a good choice. It would allow you to achieve a shallow Depth of Field and would be good in low light situations.

Well, you don't get much use from a 35mm for nature/portraits .......so, get a 100 2.8 macro if you MUST have a prime !

I also own the Nikon DX AF-P 70-300mm. And I own two prime Nikon lenses. The 50mm f1.8 and the DX version 35mm f1.8. The DX 35mm f1.8 was purchased this year by me for $197, brand new. The 50mm prime will give you a FOV of 75mm on your D7200, and is a cheap portrait and sports action lens. Both are good prime lenses that are work well in low light, and won't break your bank. Good luck.

Can't go wrong with a 50mm f1.8, super cheap used. 35's as well. Get one or both
and try them, you won't lose money on them if you don't use them much.

The OP actually said "lens to use as a prime" The OP might not mean prime lens in the way it is usually used here (a lens with a fixed length), but might mean "lens to use as a MAIN lens" The language is ambiguous. Clarification from the OP would be helpful.

In answer to your question, Both. I want a fixed length lens that I can use as my "main" or "primary" lens. I think I will look around for a 50 and a 35. I might even try lensrental.com before I purchase.

Thanks

The choice will depend on your intended subject matter.

For landscape you would want a wider angle lens and for walking around a medium focal length - each appropriate to your crop factor as I mentioned above.

Your 70-300 should already cover the rest of your range.

Hi you may need to purchase 2 lenses for two different types of shoot. Concerts, low light, movement requires a fast lens such as F 1.5~1.8 as well as a zoom. For nature what you have may be quite sufficient, as outdoor shoots do not need a fast lens. Consider a fixed focal length lens as it will maintain aperture as you zoom.
One lens doesn't fit all criteria.

Actual photographers don't zoom their prime lenses.
