Ha, indeed it is merely a camera and not a puppy; thank you for the welcome!

My original intent in posting this picture was to get some feedback regarding lighting, angle etc. I thought the wooden work bench beneath the camera made an interesting backdrop. So I posted this picture in the Gallery section and eagerly waited for comments.

Well, ostensibly moderators thought the picture had little "artistic" value and soon moved it to this section for general discussion. And I must admit it has generated some discussion since the move.

But I would still like some technical feedback on the quality of the photo, if anyone feels so inclined.

Best,

Jason

Here's a picture of my second 35mm Camera purchased new in 1979 at the Lucky Plaza in Singapore. I never use it anymore but can't seem to part with it.

Speaking of texture, here's something that caught my eye while bicycling recently.
But I think I've fallen into the same trap of thinking that texture is "everything" when so much more is required to make an "interesting" photograph.

I appreciate the criticism there Linda and chaman. And thanks especially for the links to the still-life topics Linda. I thought that the textures in my photo were good enough to carry the rest of the image into something interesting, but I now understand that I have a long way to go...

Hi there tinplater,

Thank you for your comments!

Indeed, after looking at the photograph again it does looked forced, or stiff. I'll work on that next time.

Best,

Jason

I urge everyone who thinks that a 30 dollar filter degrades the image of a 1000 dollar lens to do the simple test of mounting the camera on a tripod, taking images with and without the filter, and comparing them side by side.

And don't buy the scam about expensive filters. You don't need heliopans or B&W. A good middle-of-the-road Kenko or Tiffen or Marumi or Hoya, multicoated--not even their "pro" series--will be fine.

I agree!

Two thoughts:

1. take up something like macro photography that utilizes technique and specialized equipment to a very high degree and/or go for documentary.

2. force yourself to put away the gear for a month (or more) and just use a p&s. If you find yourself bored, with no interest in learning composition or things such as the value of light as an element for impact in photos, then maybe time to re-evaluate your interest in the hobby, period.

Well thought out and insightful riposte.

Best,

Jason

Indeed, and the cell phone requires less space when packing.

I think the Nikon Coolpix is great camera, which is certainly in your price range. Also, the suggestion to use an iphone is a good idea too. Following is a picture from an $89 Android phone.

Thank you for the reply there Longshadow.

I pulled out my multi-meter and measured 5.6VDC across the pins at the flash shoe, so it should be safe to use with my T6s. However, it's performance is probably far from optimum when used with this camera.

Does anyone have a flash recommendation for a T6s, preferably one that I can mount on the camera and also use off the camera as a remote flash?

Thanks!

Is anyone familiar with an ALFON 680 flash with Thyristor circuit?

I purchased this flash unit in 1982 for use on my Canon AE-1.

It seemed to work reasonably well on my film camera and I'm wondering if it's safe to use on my Canon T6s / 760D. I've heard there's a possibility of "back-voltage" that can possibly damage the circuitry in my T6s. But this sounds more like urban legend than fact to me, hence my query to the forum's collective brain.
