We spent six weeks in Europe mostly in Switzerland with a side trip to Normandy and Mt St Michelle and Italy.
I took my D7000, an 18-135 kit lens from my D80, a 1.8 DX35mm and the 10-24Dx WA.

I left the 70-200 home and was glad I did.

80-90% of the pictures we took were with the 18-135. there was a time or two that I wished for the 70-200 but not enough to justify carrying it around.

My observation is that for the most part a long lens in the major cities and most of the tourist areas is unnecessary.

We culled ours down, and made table top books. Also did larger prints for a book I have of my best stuff.

I think it depends on what you want to do with them.
If you want to print and sell then I'd opt for a pro service.

If they are for family and friends or to print in albums then my suggestion is to winnow them down to the keepers and take them to Costco and have them scanned to disc.
You can PP them when you get them back. Yes Costco, I was pleasantly surprised at how good a job they can do and they are not so expensive that you can't experiment.

When I was looking a good pro level Nikon scanner was $1000+ used. I can take a lot of slides to Costco for a $1000.

How much PP will depend on their age and what kind of shape they are in. I've noticed on some really old ones the colors get weird.

I did this with some of my old (circa 1960's) slides and they didn't turn out too badly.

In those days I had better gear than I was a photographer and sadly that's still the case.

The one posted below was taken over the Gulf of Tonkin in 1969 with a Nikkormat and the ubiquitous 48-85 zoom. It was a mess when I sent it out along with about 50 others. I didn't clean any of them... just sent 'em. CS5 is a wonderful thing. I've printed it and it didn't turn out too badly.

They were slides and I took them to Costco and had them scanned directly to disc.
Its not expensive and unless you have hundreds to do way more cost effective than buying a good (Nikon etc) scanner.

If you go that route make sure you ID which is the front side. I had several done backward. Might have been my own fault.

The attached pict was taken in 1970 over the Gulf of Tonkin. The camera was a Nikkormat, using Asa200 film. I think the lens was the much maligned 48-86 Zoom. I scanned this to disc along with several others two years ago at Costco. The slides were old dirty and slightly discolored.

I've cleaned them up somewhat in CS5 using Camera Raw. I'm still learning so I revisit them when I learn something new.

I'm going to rescan several because they scanned them backwards. I'll clean them this time with a can of air.

Good luck
