I have one. I got the same $99 deal from adorama. I think inkjet printer manufactures would give their printers away free if you signed some sort of ink use contract.
The Pixma Pro 100 makes gorgeous prints and a full set of refill tanks costs around $125.
Also......FWIW.......I've gotten my best results with Canon brand papers.
I've used Magic Lantern (a very popular firmware add on for several canon models) to photograph birds hitting my backyard feeder. There is a motion detect feature
That might be all you need and it's free.
It's a hack of sorts but I've never heard of anyone having major issues with it.
If you are reasonably comfortable around computers give magic lantern a look.
I recently purchased and used the Copperhill sensor cleaning kit.
The tutorial on their web site is worth looking at.
http://www.copperhillimages.com/?pr=tutorialsI used their liquid and wipes and......I'd swear my images look significantly better (in terms of IQ) than before.
I like the rifle strap idea. Straps that say "Nikon" or "Canon" are a dime a dozen but a tripod case strap that says "Remington"??? Now that'll get you some attention!
I thought it was an ad for canon's sensor self cleaning system.
I just bought one of these a couple of weeks ago. Unbelievable deal through Adorama!!
I spent a lot of time, ink and paper trying to get an exact match between my screen and the prints using Photo Studio Pro that comes with the printer.
Then I started reading. I guess what I was trying to do is very difficult, even with a calibrated monitor.
Anyway....I say all of this because I eventually gave up obsessing about getting an exact match and went for close enough.
I just printed a picture of a snow leopard cub taken at the Albuquerque Zoo on the Canon Semi Gloss paper that was part of the Adorama deal.. It probably isn't Nat Geo quality but..... Damn it looks fantastic to me (and anyone I've shown it to).
This is one hell of a printer.
I've also done some flowers on the Lustre paper and.....I think I like the Semi Gloss Better.
I too have a copper hill cleaning kit and used it for the first time last weekend. Very simple to do and very effective. Watch the video on the copper hill site.
If I don't make too much commotion I can usually get to within 8 feet. The dragonfly takes off but if I sit and wait he'll often come right back to the same spot and I can inch closer and closer. I may have to go through this 2 or three times.
EF 100 2.8 macro
Dragonflies seem to be some of the more cooperative bugs.
This one let me get to within about 2.5 ft so the 100 was enough
I have the EF 100mm 2.8L USM macro (so there is no confusion). It is a fantastic lens. If I encounter a brave and patient bug I can get a wonderful shot but I really need to get close. A couple of feet away. There aren't too many bugs that will pose nicely under those conditions. So.....like everyone is saying, longer is better. The extra $500 for the 180 (EF 180mm 3.5L macro USM) was more than I wanted to spend though.
The 100 is such an amazing lens overall (not just for macro) that I use it when ever that focal length work.
Unless you will be trying to photography the eyeballs of live insects.....you will be very happy with the 100.
If you DO want to get those eyeball shots you might go for a reverse mounted 50 and a great deal of patience.
I REALLY liked the "fair and balanced" bit!!
About 6 months ago I bought the EF 100 2.8. In a way I almost wish I hadn't. It makes my other lenses all look just a little less sharp and vibrant.
Of course it's a prime lens and everything else I have is zoom.
I bought it thinking I was going to take pictures of mosquito nostril hairs or something but I just don't have the patience to deal with virtually zero DOF or the physical flexibility to get into the awkward positions required.
My advice would be to rent this lens and see if what you think you want to do is really something you are going to enjoy
On the other hand I constantly use my 100 2.8 for less extreme work. Flowers for instance.
I went through the same thing with my brand new iPad.
The funniest part was when I rotated the iPad back into the right position and did a google search on "iPad screen goes black when rotated" and one of the hits said "take off your sun glasses"!!
