I am almost 71 and I also had a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye. I still have my Dad's Kodak Monitor with leather case that I think he purchased in the mid or late 1940s. Or perhaps the 1930s. The Kodak Monitor used 620 film (excellent film for darkroom work). I have some excellent 11 x 14 B&W prints showing excellent sharpness and detail even using Kodak Tri-X film (ASA 400). -FiddleMaker

I have been using Epson printers for over 25 years. I have Canon and Epson that print 8.5x11 and then the Epson Pro 3880. The 3880 has 9 80mil cartridges and I can tell you that I think it is the finest printer I have ever owned. In my 25 years I have never had anything but good luck with Epson. At the moment Epson is offering a $250.00 rebate on the 3880. If you buy from B&H you don't pay taxes or shipping. The value of the ink is almost $600. Combined savings really means that the 3880 is about $500. Some may not like my math but it makes sense to me. To me, the only choice is the 3880. CaptianC uses the 3880 and I think he knows his stuff... Good luck.

DavidPine, thnx much for the above info. I have no loyalty towards Canon so I will definitely consider the 3880. -FiddleMaker

You're on the right track with Epson. I recently acquired an Epson Pro 3880 and it is a great printer for photography and has large ink cartridges (9). It is expensive but may save you money in the long haul. Ink will be your biggest expense regardless of the printer. Good luck.

David, I have been toying with the idea of getting either an Epson Pro 3880 or a Canon PIXMA Pro-1. At this price level, it may not make much difference. I was lead to believe that the Canon printer has a better ink delivery system - less trouble with the print heads. But that may not be true. Any thoughts on Canon versus Epson? -FiddleMaker

CharlesA, how do I display the above links?? If I knew how to do this, I would not have had to ask my original question. Is there a search field that when a key word is inputted, these links will appear on the screen? -FiddleMaker

OK, thanks much. Miraculously, I did find "Search" in the top banner.

Aftershot is more for basic adjustments, white balance exposure sharpening etc.

paint shop pro does more advanced editing, allowing you to be more creative,

if you buy both, you can open your raw in aftershot, then after basic adjustments if you want to get more creative you can export directly to paint shop pro.

something I just learned this weekend is that if you have paint shop pro, you can get the upgrade for aftershots, rather than paying full price.. so if you think you'd like both.. buy paintshop pro first.

I just checked, pint shop pro is on sale plus enter code 10extra for another 10% off and you get a free topaz plugin worth 39$

so you can get paint shop pro x6 aftershot pro2 and a topaz plugin for 108 that's quite a deal

oops I just saw you asked about the ultimate version that would up the price a little

Mickey88, I might be better off just getting PSP X6 since this product can do all the basic stuff that Aftershot can do. Yes?

Keep in mind that PSP's RAW tools are not as powerful as aftershot pro.
If you are only doing basic work on the raw files, than this won't be an issue.

OK, Best I stick with Aftershot Pro2.

What is the main difference between Corel’s Aftershot Pro2 versus Corel’s PaintShop Pro X6 Ultimate. I need to purchase one or the other for processing RAW images from my Nikon D7000 since I hear that Capture NX2 will no longer be supported by Nikon. Thnx for any input. -FiddleMaker

That is my workflow, too - edit RAW in NX2, save as jpeg or tiff, final edit in CS6. I will continue to use NX2 until I buy my next Nikon DSLR that won't be supported, then I'll have to move to LightRoom.

Charles

Charles, I think you have answered my question about CNX2. I will not spend the $$ on this product since it appears Nikon will not be supporting CNX2 when they introduce a replacement product. I may consider LR5 or the Corel product (can't recall the exact name).

I have Elements 11 and Capture NX2 and I use NX2 almost always. It is being discontinued and replaced with a new Nikon version which I don't think will be as good based on the trial version I have seen demonstrated. NX2 works very well with Nikon View NX which comes with the camera.

Bill, when you refer NX2 (separately) you are really referring to Capture NX2, correct? -FiddleMaker

I've been useing Nikon's NX2 for 3 years or so, it truly is amazeing, what you can do with it, you have to play with it, to learn how to use it, properly, however, I have turned out some stunning photos with it......

Lone Ranger, thnx for your comment. I have been using Nikon's "freebee" (ViewNX2) for a couple years and it does some amazing things. So I was considering getting the Capture version without knowing the real difference between the paid version (Capture) and the free one (View). I figure Capture would allow me more control when dealing with RAW (NEF) files but I could be wrong. -FiddleMaker

FiddleMaker, please refer to Amehta's comment to me,
"If they looked identical, IrfanView was probably showing you the embedded jpg in the raw file, not converting the raw file."

I shoot two slots same as you and download with ViewNX2, but I don't do any editing with ViewNX2, although the jpg's and RAW's look the same, so I guess it's doing the same as Irfanview. As far as which program to use, that's been the subject of many conversations.

There is a post processing section here at UHH that can give you good ideas on the how's and why's of pp.

Oddjobber, thnx for your speedy reply. I know UHH has a section on PP of RAW files. I will look into this. My dilemma is finding this section. Shouldn't be too difficult. I am new to UHH and so it will take me some time navigating around this forum.
