Hi, Hedgehogs
You were very helpful to me when I was trying to decide what inkjet printer to choose. I went with the TS9020; got it a few days ago and am very pleased with it. However, "plug and play" is an urban myth, so now I'm asking another question. When printing from Windows, I figured out that it would choose the printer tray based on the kind of paper you tell it you're printing on - plain paper in the cassette, photo paper in the rear feed. So far, Elements 11 always automatically chooses the cassette, regardless of the paper I choose, though it does give me a yellow "attention" triangle and lets me know I shouldn't be using photo paper in the cassette (I'm not, it's in the rear feed tray). Neither Windows nor Elements actually shows a choice of trays, the options are only automatic...any ideas for me?

Thanks,

Lisa

what a fun surprise! I haven't seen or thought about fractals for a long time. I think they're beautiful!

I have had an MG6220 for many years. It prints very nicely to 8.5 x 11. I got the Pro-100, and now do most of my printing on it, but I still do cards on the 6220.

Thank you!

The Pro 100 is BIG FOOTPRINT and is heavy... Very... makes the Canon Pro-100 weigh in at just shy of 43.43lbs dimensions 27.13 wide x 15.16 deep x 8.46 high... there goes your desk top!!!

Compare the Canon MX922 vs Canon TS9020

...yeah, thanks for the reminder on the size and weight... hard to find a spot for that in my already crowded studio/library/guest room. I've bookmarked consumer.com - I hadn't seen it before & it looks useful.

Actually I have both the mx922 and the pro 100....I've had the mx922 for over a year and the pro 100 since just after new years...
They are light years apart!
The mx922 is a work horse, and does great for doc printing, scanning, copying and yes even photo printing is more than "acceptable" but it is not as great at photo reproduction as the pro 100. I also love that I can use different media in the pro 100 like canvas that is not doable on the mx922. The mx922 is available but being phased out which means the price is dropping daily, if you find one for under 75.00 new its money well spent. The pro-100 is the same story and you can get them for under $200.00 easily almost everywhere on ebay, again brand new unopened boxes. (I actually have 2 one is still in the box, I made an offer ridiculously low that got accepted it's okay I'll use it some day- It cost me less for the printer than a set of OEM inks would have cost me anyhow...LOL)

As for the workhouse of the mx922- I work for a tour company.
The first MX-922 outlasted 3 HP printers and printed over 20,000 pages before it began to have a problem, and I am sure it was a power issue on the printhead. A new printhead could have been purchased but a new printer on sale was cheaper than the printhead. If mine last 22,000 pages here at home that will carry me through about 2030 and I probably won't care! LOL

My opinion: if your budget allows, buy them both. I am confident you won't be disappointed in the expense.
Actually I have both the mx922 and the pro 100....... (show quote)

Thanks for the comparison between the 2 printers - Not sure I can justify buying 2, gonna have to decide which one... I know I'd like the better photo quality of the pro-100, but will the text quality on my cards and calendars be acceptable?

Too good to be true, but I have Two. One is with a lady friend, I have had mine for 3 months... one what, Oh! Canon TS9020. Originally sold for $200 now as low as $40. Excellent printer 5 colors plus a dedicated pigmented Black for text.

The Third-Party Ink Carts and very low cost and they are large individual units... i just installed really low cost replacement [4 complete sets for total of $36 ... ! Wow] and the printer accepted them as tho family OEM; the color excellent. Will the prints last 100 years... well, will you? No. UV is the big UHH yodel ... but how much UV do you have in your living room? Next to none. UV additive is rather standard and is low cost. Ink formulations can easily be duplicated, Take the OEM and do analysis and the components can be known, no big deal [my training was in Analytical Chemistry, so I know].

I find the quality of the prints to be excellent. The 5th color is a pale Blue/gray, the new Canon replacing the 9020 is the 9120... the Blue/gray has been replaced by a Light Gray... can one see the difference? I doubt it.

Check out reviews... and here is low price: https://www.cnet.com/news/get-a-canon-ts9020-wireless-all-in-one-printer-for-39-99/

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check this one out before I decide what to buy.

I have the MX 922 and have found it does a surprisingly good job as a photo printer. From your description I think it would serve you well since it's maximum size print is within your requirements. However, I'm sure you will get recommendations for a Canon Pro 100 which with the usual rebate is in your price range and a bargain, and is a dedicated photo printer that will print larger sizes than the MX 922. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for your thoughts! I'll give the Pro 100 another look before I decide.

Hi Hedgehogs!

I'm in the market for an ink jet printer; I've browsed on line, and looked for useful topics here and am currently leaning toward a Canon Pixma MX 922. I don't need an all-in-one, but am considering the MX922 because it seems to meet my other needs. I wonder if you can suggest others that I might prefer.

I'd like to keep the price under $200. I need to print up to 8 1/2 x 11, but no larger. This combination seems to rule out a dedicated "professional" photo printer. As an amateur, I'm OK with continuing to have photos professionally printed when I need something for a show or a special occasion, but I'd still like to get the best quality prints that I can afford.

I mainly print pages for my personal family album, cards, and multiple copies of a yearly calendar as gifts for family members. The calendar would be much easier if the printer supports duplex printing. My (very) old printer doesn't have enough memory to print the whole calendar at once, I'd really like to be able to do that. I regularly add text, so need acceptable quality text printing. I need to print on card stock. Print speed is not important to me. Reliability is. I hate paper jams. I need a network printer (pretty much all of them are), but I don't need to print directly from a camera or thumb drive.

Your suggestions and caveats would be appreciated.

Anyone know what this little guy might be? He's on a milkweed.

I know them as soldier beetles, but I think that's a generic name for a bunch of related species. They eat aphids and other garden pests.

I don't remember what martial arts master & teacher said the following, and I'm not quoting this verbatim, but "every teacher hopes to find a student who has the combination of talent and discipline to make him a champion. However, while discipline may eventually overcome lack of talent, talent alone can never overcome lack of discipline." I believe that applies to the visual arts as well.

As an amateur, I have "done" a few weddings for friends and family with limited wedding budgets, as my wedding gift to them, and they've been most pleased with the results, though I have no doubt the right professional could have done better. For our own wedding, we asked our guests to bring their cameras, and provided some disposable cameras, so more of our very limited funds could be spent giving our special guests a great time. I've never regretted it, though I know the right professional could have provided a far more beautiful album. Your friend's "hobbyist" friend may be able to provide her with an album she'll treasure, and it may even be very well done. You've done your best to educate her as to the benefits of paying for a professional product. I hope you can now have the grace to accept that it's her responsibility to make the decision she feels is best for her, even if you disagree with it, and to go to the wedding and celebrate with her.

I like the vulture - If you get over to Gaithersburg MD on winter mornings, there's a mixed flock of black and turkey vultures that like to sun themselves in a small park on Wightman (?) road on the east side of Montgomery Village near the intersection with Montgomery Village Ave. They're pretty used to people and are quite a sight lined up along the chain link fences with their wings spread. Easy access by paved road, close parking.
