Thanks but it is San Disk Extreme Pro model with 160 MB/s read and 150 MB/s write speed, about the fastest you can get.

I should have mentioned that the images were recorded on a San Disk 32 GB card and uploaded into LR CC. I tried a second card of the same model to see if that was the problem but I got the same result.

I was recently shooting a horse show in "continuous high speed release mode" (5 FPS) in RAW. When processing the images I noticed that they were sometimes recorded out of order. Often the first and last where correct but those in the middle of the sequence were in a random order. I checked the time stamp for each but since I only see capture time to the second, the shots in each sequence had the same apparent capture time. I suspected that it was due to the large size RAW files and slow buffer but when I tried a few sequences with jpeg I had the same result. Have any other D 800 owners experienced this?

I upgraded from a 2880 to the P800 last year and am extremely happy. It runs flawlessly. I only use the front fine art feeder (velvet fine art and hot press bright) but I can't recall a misfeed which was not the case with the 2880. I now print landscapes at 14 X 21 which are much more impressive than 12 X 18.

No need to create a separate catalog. Simply plug in the new external into your laptop and when importing hit "select" for Destination Photos. The dialog box should allow you to see all attached drives. Then specify the new drive as the location. I do it all the time when traveling with a LaCie Rugged drive. When you get home and want to move them to the main external drive, simply drag and drop.

Read the manual, a book, take a lesson or watch a UTube video about how a camera works. If you want to take good photos, you have to take it off automatic and understand the relationship between focal length, shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Your camera's meter wants to make pure black and pure white look neutral gray. I doubt that is what you are looking for. You need to learn to control the tool. Join a camera club, take a lesson or even study, otherwise, be happy with mediocre photos.

When you used the pop up flash as a trigger did you have it set to "Commander" and the SB800 to "Remote"? I use the Nikon lighting system all the time on my D800 with no problem in manual or TTL.

Sad to say digital won't eliminate that issue. I raced home from the mermaid parade at Coney Island a few years ago, put my card in the reader and started veiwing some very cool shots. I had another shoot in the afternoon and was hurried. I grabbed the card from the reader put it in the camera and reformatted. I took one last look at my computer screen and saw a little question mark by each thumbnail and realized that I never hit import before extracting the card from the reader.

After a great deal of research, I upgraded to a ThinkTank Streetwalker pro about a year ago and continue to be happy. In it I have a D800 with a 24-70 f2.8 attached (could configure to have the 70-200 f2.8 attached), 70-200 and 16-35 f 4 plus an SB 800, a section for 5 filters in cases and a spare compartment for misc but will accomodate another body, flash or lens. It will fit in any overhead compartment. I will carry a tripod and has lots of small pockets for misc. stuff including a water bottle. I have carried it comfortably on 5-10 mile hikes. It does not have space for a laptop but I wanted to keep it as small as possible but able to fit all my gear. It is narrow so it works well in crowds. Try aperture priority wide open (hopefully 2.8) to blur the background, increase ISO until you get 250-500 shutter and the subject will pop out of the background greatly improving the image. Checkout shots in SI and see how few show detail in the background.

If you are using outside printers, try White House Custom Color. When you sign up an account with them they will give you free calibration proofs. As I responded early in this chain, adjust brightness in the print module, all the way at the bottom, color correction/ brightness. The adjustment is not very sensitive so try +10, +20 and +30 to start. Then in Print Job, select Print to jpeg rather than to Printer. That is what your computer is putting out. Send that file to WHCC. You will get proofs back in a couple of days and you will know what adjustment to use for that level of screen brightness. I also suggest you use about 50% screen brightness. It may look dark at first, but you will get used to it. It is frustrating but once you get it set it works. I haven't adjusted mine for over a year and my prints come out perfect every time. Good luck.

I would consider the 70-200 f4. It costs less and weighs less and for your shooting you won't nee the larger aperture.

I went there a couple of years ago and took a D800, 24-70, 70-200, 16-35 f4 )which is much lighter than your 14-24) and one SB 800. I mostly used the 24-70, had a few occasions to use the 16-35 but left the 70-200 in the hotel or car most of the time. The flash was useful for evening shots of friends. I agree you should include Ravello. If you are driving, enjoy the switchbacks up the mountain.
