I'm taking a trip to Soutnern Italy, the Amalfi Coast, Positano, Naples and flying in and out of Rome with eight of my closest friends in October. Lot's of steps to climb, I understand in Positano where our main Villa and location will be. This is not a "photo trip", per se. I have a good idea what camera equipment I'll be taking but thought it would be fun and helpful to get input from the Hedgehogs. I'm not going to buy anything new so this is what we have to choose from:

D750 or D810
50mm 1.8
14-24mm 2.8
24-70mm 2.8
70-200mm 2.8
105mm micro 2.8
200-500mm 5.6
28-300mm 3.5-5.6
1.4 tele
2 - SB 800 flash units

Thanks!

I'm available. You'll need somebody to help carry all that equipment?

For me:
I'd take a full frame camera if one those is full frame and the 24-70 2.8 lens.
If not a full frame, then I would go with the 14-24 2.8

When you get there, please send me a post card!!!

You probably won't need most of it but you can put me in your Will/Living Trust. :)

If weight is an issue, I would take the 810, the 14-24, and the ?-300 zoom. Maybe a flash if you have room but chances are pretty good that you may not need it.

I have two bad knees so weight is always a consideration but since hills are involved, carry only what will feel comforable for hours on end.

Be sure to include a daytrip to Capri -crowds shoudn't be too bad in October. Also recommend Ravello - nice little town in the hills above Amalfi. If you are lucky enough to catch it, Sorrento lights up like a glowing bowl of gold for a just a couple of minutes at sunset. Amazing!!
May bump into you there.

14-24 and the 28-300 should cover ALL your bases.

However, since you say this is not a "photo trip" On second thought, I might even drop the 28-300 and keep the 24-70 on my camera and use the 14-24 when I am in close quarters.

What I would take is one camera, the 50mm f/1.8 and the 70-200mm f/2.8, several spare batteries and spare memory cards.

You have about 10 grand worth of gear. I have to assume you know what you are doing. Travelling to Italy is no different that travelling to anywhere. But here is my suggestion anyway take the 24-70 and the 70-200 and the TC. You did not mention any kind of support, so get or take at least a monopod.

In 1999 I traveled that route. There is a big break in my life where I shot film and then quit. I did not pick a camera up again until 2010. So for many years I traveled with out a camera. I love to take quality images. I can not imagine traveling with all your equipment or mine. I shoot Canon. A lady in my photo club shoots Nikon she travels with 810/ l28-300mm 3.5-5.6. I find that if I can not carry a pod and many times I can't, I can find a way to stabilize. I had a great trip but even as good a shape as I was I got wore out.

Lenses: 24-70, you may not actually take it off your camera very often. 28-300, for the times you need a longer shot. You can always find room to stick in your 50mm f1.8 which may come in very handy in low light situations...plus it's a prime. Camera? Which one is smallest and easiest to carry.

Actually, you may end up putting the 28-300 on your camera and never taking IT off, it's so versatile.

P.S. The 28-300 is smaller and lighter than the 70-200....more compact. You'll appreciate that when you're carrying a bag and out walking.

My wife and i just bought a house in France. I came saddled with all sorts of gear and numerous lenses. I find that I put on my 28-300 and that's perfect 95% of the time......you'll likely never need more on the high end and can likely get by fine on the low end. Save yourself a lot of weight and trouble - one lens will do it.

Honestly, I have found that the 28-300 is a great compromise for an all around lens. I've taken great wide angle panorama series with it and can reach out if something needs a zoom.

Cover the Nikon logo with black electrical tape and keep it close at all times, particularly in Rome. I would recommend one of PacSafe's steel cable reinforced camera straps or Messenger bags. Pick pockets and theft is a problem in the big cities.
