Other than for professional photographers (those who earn their living through photography) how many lenses are really needed? On full frame camera is anything more than a 35mm or 50mm and a specialty lens, ie a telephoto, or macro, or something else depending on the focus of interest really needed? I know that lens manufacturers want us to think we do, but do we really?

Only you can answer that question. You know what you use and what you don't and what you might use if you bought something else.

Does anyone have a view about UV filters affecting high contrast scenes (eg, black & super-brightly colored clothing on bright white snow)? I have Marumi & Tiffen filters. I'm wondering whether these filters may increase contrast on an already contrasty scene creating over-saturated colors & super-black blacks. If so it seems logical to remove the filters for these types of shots (I only have them on for lens protection). Am I reading this right or.........

I would try it out with the UV filters on and compare the results with shots done without them. Then you'd have first-hand knowledge. Other people's tests wouldn't necessarily be the same as your own.

Howard Brodsky is on Flickr and is one of my favourite wildlife photographers. He's a Canadian photographer, who lives in Ontario, Canada.

I was wondering if you can figure out what post processing he uses to obtain these world class photos. My goal is to obtain the same results, one day.

I'm providing a link that illustrates one of his outstanding shots.

Post processing isn't necessarily the answer to getting world-class photos. First of all, you need to be a world-class photographer!

Recently my neighbor and I both took shots of an eagle perched behind our houses. His was a better version because he got a closer shot (crop sensor) with decent results. I was using a FF with a 70-200 f4 because that was there to grab at the time. By the time I got my 200-500 mounted, the eagle "flew the coop". Later I viewed Steve Perry's free video on cropping and and I am reaching the conclusion that a crop body deserves a place in my kit when cropping a FF image will yield less satisfactory results. I also note that Steve includes a D500 in his kit. Hogger thoughts welcome.

I've been looking at this issue prior to my trip to Africa. I've concluded that I will be better served by taking the crop sensor body with an 18-400mm lens.

Recently had the opportunity to view the Asian Lantern Festival in Tucson at Reid Park Zoo. I highly recommend it for those that live in the area. There are over 40 custom lanterns on display. "The event is a unique collaboration between the zoo, the University of Arizona’s Confucius Institute, Tianyu Arts & Culture, Inc. and the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center."

Stunning!

Welcome to the forum. Look around and have fun.

Welcome! I don't know why it is exactly, but when I visited Montana some years ago, I thought the Big Sky Country moniker was very appropriate.

Note: I am re-posting this because I only got one comment on the original post. I am only interested in knowing if others are having the same issue with Topaz Sharpen AI.

I downloaded Topaz Sharpening AI today to see how well it worked. Actually the two images that I tried were somewhat improved but then the "Save" process it extremely slow. It took over two minutes to save a 54MB tiff file that I processed with the program. In addition my PC was slowed to the point that the cursor would barely move. I am running 16MB RAM on an intel i7 processor. I am interested in hearing what other UHHer's think of this program.

Yes I found it awfully slow as well. They do have recommended graphics card info on their site and I think mine could do with an upgrade. I didn't have the best sort of photo to test it on but I think the portrait I tried did look a little better after processing.

Does anybody have Clear AI from Topaz labs? Is it worth $60? A worthwhile addition to NIK Clear and Raw Sharpener?

They just announced Sharpen AI. Might be worth a look.
