A 50 is a great second lens because they are much faster than a zoom. The Canon "nifty-fifty" is a huge bargain. Not only does the wide aperture help with low light and with controlling depth of field, it has less spherical distortion. Also, using a prime lens rather than a zoom completely changes your mindset. (Try it. You'll see what I mean.)

GIMP does just about everything Photoshop does. There is a bit of a learning curve but it's good and, so far as I know, carries no malware.

Then explain please why the number of gun deaths per 100,000 population is so much lower in Canada, the UK, Japan and most of western Europe.

In the simplest terms, it is the distance from the centre of the lens to the surface of the film or sensor. In a zoom lens it changes with the setting. Smaller numbers (20mm) are wide angle and bigger ones (500mm) are telephoto. Remember a lens does not create a rectangular image but a circle. The rectangular image is taken from the centre of the circle. Since most digital SLR's have a sensor that is smaller than a 35mm film frame, a 50mm lens, standard for a 35mm camera, will actually act as a slight telephoto on most SLR's. It's as though you cropped the centre of the image. And although a 50mm lens is standard on a 35mm camera, the standard focal length on a camera that shoots 120 roll film is about 100mm. If you used the 50mm lens on the 120 roll film camera, it would produce a circular image with vignetting at the corners.

Not to make it more confusing, but lenses also carry another mm designation. For example my Canon zoom is marked 18-55mm. Thats the focal length. It also is marked 58mm. preceded by a symbol that looks like an O with a slash through it. That is the diameter of the filter or other screw in lens attachments.

Your logic is typical of your breed. What do my politics (left of centre) have to do with my sexuality (hetero.)
Yes. I am somewhat liberal/left wing (which in Canada is not regarded as a perversion.) But if that makes me an idiot, I assume you also consider as idiots Noam Chomsky, Adlai Stevenson, Martin Luther King, Richard Branson, Golda Meir, Franklin Roosevelt, Kenneth Galbraith and countless other academics, political activists, writers, intellectuals and enlightened entrepreneurs.

A huge problem is the fact kids grow up watching movies in which fifteen people are blown away in the first five minutes and playing video games the object of which is to shoot and destroy the opponent. Or they listen to rap "music" that extols violence. At one time, differences were settled with a fist fight and nobody suffered more than a black eye. Now they use guns rather than fists, largely because of the influence of TV and video-games on young minds. Likewise, the "gun culture" has also been embedded in the minds of mentally disturbed killers.

For somebody "just learning" you're doing great! There is really nothing more these shots need. It might be fun to play with them...make them bluer and therefore colder looking...change the cropping to make a wider view... include a solitary human figure...fiddle around with some PS effects...but there is nothing wrong with them the way they are.
I also live in a wintry part of the world and I love it. Our Australian friend doesn't know what he's missing! :-)

How good are you at bluffing? You might get through with a soup can label if your BS is strong enough.
But as a former newsie, I can tell you that a phony stands out and is easy to spot. They also are held in scornful contempt.
Also, these days security on everything is much much tougher than it used to be.
And, as someone has mentioned here already, big events usually issue their own credentials. A generic press card won't get you into a G8 meeting or a big rock concert.
I made a point in my career of never mixing business and pleasure. In short, no autographs, no snapshots although I was always happy if someone else took a pictures of me and a celeb and sent me a copy. One of my most valued possessions is a picture of me and Jack Benny but somebody else took it without my knowledge and very kindly sent me a copy.
All of which is not to say that my (legitimate) press card didn't get me lots of free admissions and VIP treatment when I wasn't actually on assignment.

I picked up an old projector at a garage sale. I already had a device that projects the image onto a groundglass screen. You set up your video camera and shoot the groundglass. They come out pretty well. We also added an audio track, reminiscing into a microphone as we watched. I then transferred the footage to a DVD. In effect we transferred 1960's projector technology to 2013 flat screen TV technology. I didn't bother, but I'm sure that using the features in a program like MAGIX you could sharpen the images, correct faded colour, improve contrast etc. etc.
