Not for long! Mexico is paying for a great big wall to make sure nothing can cross the border.

I saw an interesting YouTube video last week talking about ND filters by IIRC Tony Northrop. He showed a technique where instead of using a ND filter he took like 10 shots at IIRC normal exposure and merged them together in Photoshop to a final image. I believe he was shooting at ISO 100 and he said using the 10 shots he ended up with a better result than using the ND filter and an equivalent ISO of like 10. I will have to look for it again, but has anyone ever tried to do that. or can you explain the theory behind that method for me.

Best,

It is called stacking. Sony has a Playmemories App called Smooth Reflections which you can download that will do it in-camera. Depending on what you are shooting, it will take maybe 40 shots and stack them in-camera and output one jpeg file. It works very nicely for smooth water , reflections etc.

Strong series, Phil, with #1 being a true showstopper. The incongruity of playing the flute while balancing on the railing is fascinating enough, but you also were able to capture in gorgeous light, with a complimentary background. Wonderful!

#6 is an eye-catching composition of the intricacies of the boat's rigging and #7 is just plain fun.

Thanks Linda. Delighted to see you back from your little break.

Repleo,
Lovely images! We used to vacation in Wellfleet from the time my daughter and her nephews were infants (1980) until they went off to college. You brought back many fond memories: Uncle Tim's Bridge, Cahoon Hollow Beach and the bar/restaurant at the top of the dune there, the Lunch Box, Long Pond, the Puritan store downtown..... We used to run the 5-miler up a long hill to a park. On July 4th we would head to the beach at Truro with the grill and hot dogs to watch the fireworks. Mary Hadley pottery. Nancy Whorf. We would get fresh seafood (mussels and oysters) from the Swedes, substitute teachers if I remember correctly, across the highway from the slight left turn to go into Wellfleet. The parade on July 4th was a slice of local color! Thanks for the memories (some of which are a little foggy!). I have trays and trays of slides from those vacations shot with a Minolta camera...still have the body and all the lenses, which the sales staff at the local camera shop said "take to Goodwill."

Fiat76,
Thanks for sharing your memories. Maybe its time to come back and refresh them. The Beachcomber at Cahoon Hollow is our favorite watering hole, but it had a close shave this summer when half the parking lot slid down the hill. I think the Puritan store is actually in Chatham. I will have to check out some of the other places you mentioned. BTW, I assume that is a '76 Spyder on your avatar. I used to have a '73. Fun car!!!
Thanks for looking.

Wellfleet is a small fishing village on outer Cape Cod. With coastline on both the ocean and bay sides of Cape Cod, Wellfleet is one of those towns that can boast both sunrises and sunsets over water. Mostly a summer vacation spot now, in Colonial times the settlement started as a whaling village. Whales would enter Wellfleet Bay during high tide. Villagers would cut off their retreat as the tide receded and then slaughter the stranded whales. Wellfleet is now better known for the quality of its oysters which are farmed on the shallow bay side and for an active female dominated artist community.
I was taking some evening shots at Uncle Tim's Bridge when I heard some weird flute music. I turned around and saw this interesting character walking nonchalantly along the railing playing his oriental flute. Got this quick shot off before he walked by me.

Feedback, comments or your memories appreciated.

I doubt that the 1/focal length or 1/focal length * crop factor recommendation would hold up for the ultra wide angle lenses available today. That would let me shoot my 12mm (crop) at 1/16 second without IS. I have never tried it that low and I certainly wouldn't suggest it as a minimum safe shutter speed.

Lovely shot of the Blasket Islands. The largest of the Islands was inhabited until the 1950's when the Government resettled the islanders on the mainland. For such a small community, it produced a bevy of wonderful writers. The deserted village makes for some great photo opportunities if you can get out there. We were in Dingle in September. I had timed my trip to be able to take a ferry out to the Islands, but the sea was too rough and the ferries were cancelled for the remainder of the season. Taking the ferry requires transferring from a small boat onto rubber dinghies at both ends. Maybe next time!!

We in the US live are proud to live in a Capitalist society, which means it is run for the benefit of and to protect those of us with Capital. Trickle down economics is based on the idea that if we rich Capitalists can gorge ourselves enough, we will spill enough crumbs to feed the rest of the country including waiters and photographers. Wait for the upcoming tax reform and see who benefits the most in actual $$$ - the lowly waiter or the millionaire - and guess who is going to foot the bill for the deficit. MAGA HAHA.

A story of my own, several years ago I found an empty lot across from a day care center I was remodeling. In the early mourning and after work I photographed all of the different bugs visiting the weed invested lot. Several days into it the neighbor across the road came over and demanded to know what I was doing. My first question to the man was if he owned the property, after kicking some dirt around and looking down he said no. I reluctantly let him know what I was doing, taking macro shots for christ sake. He told me he didn't appreciate me being there, I just replied to call the police if he had a problem. This went on for the rest of the week. The following monday when I arrived at the job, I noticed the lot had been mowed, his way of telling me to move on. I should mention the house did receive a lot of traffic a clue to what he was up too. That close to a day care center I'm sure he finally had to move on once they reopened, he was a renter.
I'm don't think I would ever offer up my memory card, but in todays society their are a lot of crazy out there. In the state of florida any time you step off a public road you Are trespassing. If fenced I never step across but have been known to venture in when not fenced. I've had police stop in the middle of the country and tell me to get back in my van and move on. I've had an older fellow drive his car in front of a scene I was trying to photograph, because I was in his neighborhood and he didn't know me. I've had neighbors here in my neighborhood approach me when they see me crawling thru the ditches with a camera and flash asking what the hell I was up too, now everyone nows the guy with the funny hat and camera is OK. We all have rights, but people are a little more nervous, not to mention a whole lot crazier......Being a woman makes it a little more intimidating. It's a shame we just can't enjoy our hobby without somehow pissing others off..

I think Florida is paranoid - all of those gated communities. Maybe the paranoia is justified, but why would anyone want to live in a fearful and untrusting environment like that. Northern winters aren't that bad.

I rarely shoot anything moving faster than continental drift. I mostly use aperture priority and set for the DoF I want, set a low ISO and adjust exposure compensation until the histogram or live view in the EVF looks like what I want. I am not saying this is the best way to shoot. I think I am getting pretty good with composition, but I still find it difficult to capture subtle exposures in-camera. If it is a simple shot I might take one in auto as well to use as a sort of baseline.

the above "topic" pretty much says it all. I did a little research and found a site that gives the rising and setting in degrees true north for any place and at any date on the calendar. A compass will give magnetic north which is not the same thing as "true" north. Most maps have grid lines that line up with trun north but do not take account of the "inclination" unless you look at the bottom and see an inclination indicator in degrees "west" or "east". If you see where I"m going with all of this and have gone through the same process of trying to figure out where the sun or moon will appear low on the horizon for a good shot, please explain your workflow in this area. I am an amature but want to learn...

I use PhotoPills. Drop the pin on any point on the map and it gives minute by minute azimuth and elevation readings for rising and setting of sun, moon, moon phase and and MW galactic center. It also has an augmented reality feature that superimposes the sun or night sky onto the phone camera screen. It also gives the altitude and height above the horizon for the spot you drop the pin on and a bunch of other features like star trail calculator, DoF calculator, ND exposure calculator etc. Great for planning or just fooling around with. Well worth the $10 even if you never took a photo.

It is very easy to use. I also have TPE but haven't invested the time or brain cells to learn how to use it.

Good Afternoon All:

Sony has issued a firmware update 4.0 for the A7RII. Please visit the Sony website to download their most current update for the A7RII.

I would suggest reviewing the supposed benefits before downloading. Also, be sure to read ALL of the instructions and warnings. I have read articles about Sony's being turned into bricks by 'stuck' updates. Sony warns that the update process is irreversible and Sony warranty excludes 'software ' problems.
