I was just taking some pictures today of some scarecrows for a photography contest. I first was taking them in one of the near by towns. It is an annual event. Kids make scarecrows on the main street in town.

I live in an apartment complex. When I came home from taking pictures before I happen to notice someone had put a small scarecrow on the lawn. This small scarecrow was small and cute and I thought I would take some pictures of it.

I was not inside any of the buildings in the complex. I was on the side walk and the scarecrow was on the front lawn of one of the buildings.

Most of the apartments you have to go up stairs to. There are a couple of apartments in the complex that are on the ground floor.

Where I was taking pictures was on the other side of the complex and I don't know how the apartments are set up where I was taking the pictures.

I took some pictures of the scarecrow and it was getting dark so the flash did go off.

The next thing I know some teenage kid comes out of the building as if he was going to attack me saying why was I taking pictures of his apartment?

I didn't even know what he was taking about. Apparently this was one of the ground floor apartments.

I could not see into the building since there were blinds and they were drawn. The scarecrow I was taking pictures was small and of was on lawn on the ground.

I told him what I was doing. I showed him the photos of the scarecrow and even offered to give him the memory card.

He said he was sitting inside with his friends and saw the flash and one of his friends said there was someone taking pictures of his apartment. The blinds were drawn and I could not see inside this apartment. If I could not see inside he would not have been able to see outside. So something sounds fishy to me.

I have lived here for over ten years. I see people taking pictures all the time in the complex with camera and with their cell phones. I take pictures around the complex all the time. I have always tried to be careful and considerate and not to take pictures of windows. I am wondering if this kids were up to something and maybe I should have called the police? This kid seemed like he was going to attack me.

I am guessing that you are a woman which possibly makes it a different situation from me as a 200 lb male that was a school principal for 30 years. I would have started nice like you did and show the pictures but not offer the SD card. If he persisted I would have suggested he was acting guilty and ask if I should call the police? It sounds like he was being a bully and exerting control. I am glad you weren’t hurt.

A story of my own, several years ago I found an empty lot across from a day care center I was remodeling. In the early mourning and after work I photographed all of the different bugs visiting the weed invested lot. Several days into it the neighbor across the road came over and demanded to know what I was doing. My first question to the man was if he owned the property, after kicking some dirt around and looking down he said no. I reluctantly let him know what I was doing, taking macro shots for christ sake. He told me he didn't appreciate me being there, I just replied to call the police if he had a problem. This went on for the rest of the week. The following monday when I arrived at the job, I noticed the lot had been mowed, his way of telling me to move on. I should mention the house did receive a lot of traffic a clue to what he was up too. That close to a day care center I'm sure he finally had to move on once they reopened, he was a renter.
I'm don't think I would ever offer up my memory card, but in todays society their are a lot of crazy out there. In the state of florida any time you step off a public road you Are trespassing. If fenced I never step across but have been known to venture in when not fenced. I've had police stop in the middle of the country and tell me to get back in my van and move on. I've had an older fellow drive his car in front of a scene I was trying to photograph, because I was in his neighborhood and he didn't know me. I've had neighbors here in my neighborhood approach me when they see me crawling thru the ditches with a camera and flash asking what the hell I was up too, now everyone nows the guy with the funny hat and camera is OK. We all have rights, but people are a little more nervous, not to mention a whole lot crazier......Being a woman makes it a little more intimidating. It's a shame we just can't enjoy our hobby without somehow pissing others off..

You were in a tough situation and, as I said, I’m glad you weren’t hurt. People on drugs do incredibly stupid things things so probably best you just walked away.

Tell the little shit to piss off. I remember the Kathy Bates line from Fried Green Tomatoes, "honey I'm older and have more insurance."

Glory, to bad you had to go through that.

When that happens to me, to be subtle, I use my middle finger....., if that fails, I'm less subtle and use both middle fingers. If they get even more aggressive, I use my Colt 45. THAT has never failed to completely quiet them down, then I run like H*LL!!! LoL

Glory, actually I'm just kidding! It's actually never happened to me, so I'll cross that bridge when it's there!!!
Maybe practice your four letter words, then USE them!!! LoL

I sometimes get questioned when I am doing street photography. When it is film, I can not even show them a file. I do not, in those cases, have the option to delete a photo. I just try to be polite. My understanding is that you have the right in the US to take pictures in public places. I never take photos of children without permission. I do not take pictures of people with guns without permission. If I am in a setting, like a bar, and I want pictures of the scene, I sometimes will ask in advance--or advise folks that I want a picture of the scene, etc. I find that people mind less if you are not trying to be secretive about it.

I do not know what you do if no one is in plain sight and they come out to confront you. I suppose just say you were taking a picture of the lawn display and then leave. In today's world, you have to be careful about confrontations.

So what was the outcome. Did he threaten you, did he take the sd card you offered? Even if blinds a drawn he would see the flash outside the window.

I would have called the police and told them a drug crazed teenager was assaulting me.

Which would have been a false police report. The OP didn't say he even raised his voice. If you thought someone was outside your house taking flash pictures, wouldn't you go out and ask what they were doing.

He didn't come out with his friends, which might have been frightening. I think this was possibly a case of someone over reacting. But lets build it out of proportion and assume the teenager did something wrong.

I don't see a real threat there.
