. . . a lot of snow and freezing rain.

Nice pictures 👍
These remind me - many years ago,
We used to get icecicles from the gutters almost down to the ground.
I took 4 of 5 larges ones and very carefully stuck the big ends in the snow, about a half a foot away from each other in a haphazard grouping - reaching as far as I could, so as not to have foot prints in my shot - took the shot at night with assorted lighting set ups. Converted to B&W, turned upside down - and vwahlah! A group of tornados.
It turned out really cool - unfortunately I no longer have the print.
Just wanted to share the idea.

Jack, not to be too critical but there is one mis-statement in your post. I'm not being too critical, I hope but it's important. f stop is concerned with how open the iris in the lens is. It has nothing to do with shutter speed although it is one corner of the "exposure triangle"

No worries, I can take criticism - I've been married 😏.
I might have worded things a bit unclear.
I know when I started out in digital it was very difficult. but once I understood the triangle, its like a flash went off 😆
I did say F stop is how much your shutter opens (?)

Hi Marsha and welcome - I'm new here too. So far, very friendly folk 👍
What helped me when starting out was setting the camera to manual and just start playing around with settings - make a note of what your settings were, go from there - the beauty of digital photography is your not going to mess anything up, and it doesn't cost a dime to shoot 300 pictures 😏.
I started with film.
There is the basic triangle - ISO (sensitivity to light), F stop (how much your shutter opens), and Speed (how long it stays open) - once you understand those, your on your way.
Very over simplified version, but mastering the art of "how" to do it is half the fun.
Nice pictures btw - thank you for sharing

If I may, indulge in a short story -
It was 6 or 7 months out from a very painful and devastating divorce. Several other things happened at the same time - I wont get into all that.
I was going through what is known as "the dark night of the soul". My world as I knew it had crumbled.
One day I was walking through the forest, Monongahela If I remember right -
Alone, broken, very depressed.
I sat on the ground, against a huge oak tree and contemplated life.
Amidst my black cloud, I happen to notice a couple of mushrooms, sitting in just the right light - I pulled out my camera and took a picture.
The next day I looked at my picture and realized, it wasn't half bad.
I thought about that -
Here I am, walking alone - very depressed - my heart and brain screaming "What do I do now!??", . . . And I took the time to get a good shot.

I have had an interest in photography since I signed up for the dark room developing class in junior high - but life got in the way of me pursuing it professionally. She was a budding photographer when we met, which rekindled my own interests. It was very much the running theme of our relationship.
10 years later - 2 years ago, I cursed the very subject! - But in my darkest hour . . . I stopped to take a picture.

Why do " I " do photography?
I see things in a frame - I always have. My camera captures that frame, "got it!"
I very often only look at the picture from the back of my camera, and never look at it again - but I got it!
Someday, someone will scroll through my pictures - and be able to see the world as I saw it.
Sure, I strive to take "good" pictures, and I have learned allot with modern post production software - but I can now know that I captured that frame.
I hadn't given much thought to "why" I do it, until reading this forum post - and I realized, photography has been the only constant in my life.

How does that saying go? "The best camera, is the one your using"?

I know that feeling. In January of 1968, I met this girl. We always had a good time when we saw each other but there was something about her that made me a little nervous. In June we will be married 50 years. I still have this gut feeling. Do you think I should have trusted my gut or taken things as they unfolded?

Litterally laughed out loud!
Made my day - thank you!

Hi all - newbie here - just joined a few minutes ago.
I was in Moab in June last year, spent a cpl months camping on blm land outside of town. Beautiful area! Amazing sunrises and sunsets! Definitely a tourist town.
Sorry I cant really give any advice as far as touring the place - I can say this tho, the people were all very friendly in town, and its easy to find clean, free drinking water 👍
That time of year it can get hot! Be prepared. Photo ops everywhere you look - have fun ☺
Ill probably be going back this year.
