Hey now this one was unique and fun (other than the water + camera = don't mix).

Wanted to shoot wake boarders and water skiers for a long time now but this opportunity came up to cover the Pro Bass fishing tournament at Lake Tenkiller so why not right?

There's a 1st time for everything right? CC welcomed as well as compliments of course!

Thanks,
Jim

First of all thanks to everyone that messaged me with tips on how to approach writing sports articles for newspapers. Everyone had great insight which I've applied to this new craft resulting in praise from my editor about how good they are for a new writer.

Now on to the good stuff... Here are a few of the photos that I get to see online with my byline firmly attached to them. As you can see there's more than just football which I love and I'm going to be credentialed to cover the BASS Masters Tournament on Lake Tenkiller next week.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that helped and show some of the photography work they've had me assigned to. It's all interesting and meeting people like this really opens doors from a networking standpoint.

Let me know what you think and as always CC is welcomed!

Hey everyone!

I'm a photographer, to be more specific a seasoned sports photographer. I am very comfortable behind the camera and have written solid essays, emails, etc.

My issue is this job requires two HS Football articles each week. Unfortunately I've never written any AP style Football related sports articles so I'm asking any newspaper sports writers/photojournalists for your pro pointers and advice. I've been an professional engineer since college and super driven to succeed so rest assured your time will be very appreciated.

They are looking for them to be turned in every Tuesday with my Pregame analysis and write a Post-game analysis article with stats, highlights, coaches quotes, and answers to relative questions (by a midnight deadline).

Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm sorry I guess I didn't understand the issue from the original post buddy... I wish that was the case with my gear!

All the best!

I have a full frame Canon 5D, Mark III and a couple of CMOS Canon cameras (D70 and SL2). I may have misinterpreted the article but I read that it is unwise to try to use the FF lenses on the CMOS camera. The article I read some time ago talked about all sorts of possible problems, not the least of which is not getting the image I see through my viewfinder on the CMOS device. Any suggestions and comments would be welcome.

I have two Nikon crop frame cameras and love using FF lenses on them. In fact I only have one crop frame lens and it was a kit lens and every other lens is a full frame lens. The Nikon D7200 body has a focus screw that works with my older Pro lenses so that might be the only reason to use crop lenses that I can think of.

I like the first, minus the tree, because of the bankings. Real action to imagine completed. Good get!

Thanks so much for the glowing comment it is very appreciated!

It was serendipitous to say the least because, I was told after posting on Facebook that they just got back from a six month deployment overseas.

Thank you! I think the second one is the best shot too! I think these shots justify always having your camera with you everywhere right?

I was in Tulsa driving towards the airport a couple of days ago when I noticed three F-16 Fighter Jets in formation circling the airport. I looked at my girlfriend and she said, "Well let's go!" so I pulled off the highway and headed to the access road at the end of the main runway. This process took longer than I thought and we saw them descending until they dissipated below the treetops. I thought I might at least get some taxiing shots as the headed to their hangers but nothing.

So disappointed I half threw my camera into her arms and pulled onto one of the main roads when I see two of them in the distance and vectoring in for a landing. I find a paved but long abandoned entrance and swerve in as the first F-16 roars past less than a block away across the street. I throw the lens cap to my trusted 70-200mm VR lens and get the WB, Aperture, and Exposure adjusted from pure muscle memory to get these awesome shots...

Aim High right?? The location was pure luck but the rest I chalk up to experience...

Thanks!
Jim

I shoot a lot of Gymnastics Meets and love using my (3rd) Nikon D7200 (yeah I love this body enough to buy three of them). Shooting in a gym means learning your gear. I use one of my Nikkor 70-200mm VR Tele-Zooms at 2.8 with AF-C 21 Focus Points, Shutter Speed of 1/500-1/1000 and ISO of 3200-6400 depending on how much exposure correction you end up needing.

I always use Manual Mode then Manually set the White Balance using a gray card and set for jpeg files (usually the smallest size) to give me smaller more manageable files that don't make me deal with converting during post.

This is one of those times when you really need to "getting it right in the camera" so there is very little to no work in post other than exif data, watermarks, etc...

Practice by tracking and focusing on birds flying so you'll think gymnasts are kinda slow and easy to follow in comparison.

Anyway I hope that this helps you out...

Thanks,
Jim Cameron

Hi jcspics. I had been talking to the state director of high school baseball about where I could shoot from on the field. I had earlier been at game where umpires told me that a photographer had a letter from the state that he could shoot from the field. I contacted the director and he told me that #1 there was no letter and here in Kansas and national rules state that no media is allowed in dugouts at all. I told him I had good relationships with most head coaches and 99% let me in their dugouts. He said no media allowed, then after saying that he said if they come over and ask me to leave I should. He also said the home teams, before games start can set a space for media photographers to shoot from which would be a dead ball space. Ok knowing that I always go to umpires before games and ask if ok to shoot from outside dugouts. Ok I was at game asked the umps if ok and the home plate ump said sure, then the field ump said as long as he gets no complaints. I was shooting from just outside third base dugout and there was a man on second. I moved over to my left to get batter shot of third. I looked over and with parents behind the fence I could see I was probably blocking their view. Going back to umps words and I always try not to block anybodies view anyway I moved on past them to a gate right before bullpen and stepped outside. It was perfect height though as I could shoot right over it. Well inning was over and actually my team went out to the field to warm up. The left fielder threw ball way over the other players head and luckily I looked up. It was headed right at my head. I was holding my camera and monopod with right hand. I moved to my left and ball hit my 80-400MM lens on the side which was extended all the way out. The impact knocked out of my hands. I recovered and turned to see my camera in one spot and my lens and monopod in another. I walked over to them and I could see they were messed up. The lens has a big crack and dent where the ball hit it and won't move at all the end of lens had the bracket off of camera still on it. Camera had pins and springs sticking out of mounting area. I am not wealthy enough ( I am retired now) to buy new ones and don't really have the money to repair either. I wanted to cry!!! Sorry this was so long but that is the story. As long as you are behind something I think you will be fine otherwise, but always keep your eyes open especially between innings. Thanks

Tom
Hi jcspics. I had been talking to the state direct... (show quote)

Wow! That story is such a bummer and almost got me choked up too... I can't image loosing gear like that since I'm a "starving artist" in a tiny town that has to drive at least 90 miles to get a paying gig. So I can understand not being able to afford replacing my pro Nikon lenses. I have that 80-200 lens so I know its very decent glass but not a replacement for what you lost. Maybe you can get a TC-200 teleconverter to get some reach back.?.

Thanks for sharing and good luck buddy...

-Jim
