I haven't kept up with the rules but I think VLOS (visual line of sight) is FAA mandatory at this point. My race drones are VLOS with goggles and several (home built) small ground station receivers with 5" and 7" shrouded screens on tripod, and I have several 370-400mm light duty camera drones. Wind (brisk to strong) with heavy above the treetop turbulance has been a killer for me (and several drone buddies) lately, seems like every time I'm planning to fly the winds here are just strong enough to make me hesitate. None of mine have GPS either, although I could add.
Got into the race drones to keep my mind sharp and skills up, but I'm not any real competition for the younger folks, and I'm a much more conservative and careful flyer. Do like what I've been seeing with the newer model camera platforms, and I've not kept up on "who's the best", but sounds like most still see DJI as the standard, so I might go lookin for a used/new Phantom 3 Stnd.

I didn't take the drone out much last year because it seemed like it was always raining. And then after the rain would come the wind.
You could try looking here, even though with just a quick look, I don't see any 3's, but a couple 4's.
I see Amazon has them for $489.
