Just south of Yellowstone, between Yellowstone and Grand Teton, is a resort and campground called Flagg Ranch. They have small cabins that are similar to a normal hotel room. They have a decent restaurant and gift shop in the main lodge. They also have a gas station, which you will need. I have stayed in the cabins and I have camped there. It gives you good access to both parks, which is nice. Jackson is also a reasonable drive. It will be about a two hour drive to Lamar Valley in the far NE corner of Yellowstone. I recommend it.

If you have the time and the $$$, take a float plane trip to Brooks Falls in Katmai NP. I did it from Homer in 2006 for about $600 pp. I know it is available from Anchorage too. Considering the longer distance and inflation, it might be $1000 pp. I know that's an expensive excursion, but it's a once in a lifetime photo opportunity. You've seen the bears in the falls in national geographic and on tv. You can take the same photos. Take a medium to long zoom like 100-400. You will get some incredible shots. I guarantee you'll get shots you can enlarge and hang on your wall. You'll be talking about them forever. It's about a 2 hour plane ride to land on the lake. You get a briefing from the park rangers and then walk about a mile to the platform next to the falls. You'll have about 3-4 hours there to shoot. Unforgettable.

I've used my 17-55 2.8 for several years with my 7d mkII. It's a nice walk around lens. I'm pretty happy with it. I've taken some nice shots with it. I seem to get better results outside. I've never thought I got great shots with it indoors. That might just be me.

My wife and I did a trip with Lion World Travel. They are based in Toronto and subcontract their tours with reputable local companies. We did their tour of East Africa in Kenya and Tanzania. It was amazing. We went to 7 parks in 12 days. I can strongly recommend them. Take a long lens. I used a 100-400 with a 1.4 tc on my 7dII. My wife used a Tamron 150-600 G2 on her 80d. You won’t need that reach for every shot, but when you need it, you need it. Enjoy your trip.

I did an Alaska cruise in 2005. You will need a long lens for wildlife. You will also need rain gear. You should look for a cruise that goes up the Tracy Arm. The Holland America cruises from Vancouver did it in 2005. Have a great trip.

I have 3 think tank retrospective bags. I have the 5, 7 and 20. All are very well made and comfortable to carry. They are sturdy but soft. And they are pretty inconspicuous. They don’t look like camera bags. I have not used any other bag since I bought these. I highly recommend them. I have the original versions. There is a V2 available now but I think the differences are pretty subtle.

What’s your favorite messenger bag for a full frame DSLR with 2 lens and why. I am looking to buy one and don’t trust the reviews from the vendors sites. Thanks for all your help!!

My wife and I went to Kenya and Tanzania in February, 2018. We were primarily interested in wildlife photos. She carried an Canon 80D with a Tamron 150-600 G2 and I carried a Canon 7D II with a Canon 100-400L and a 1.4 TC. We both got great shots. You will be frustrated with anything less than 400mm.
