The salmon berry is edible. It has a refreshing taste that is not to sweet and is not tarte. You are right about the thorns. It generally grows in areas that get a of moisture.

Here are some pictures taken of squirrels during an afternoon walk (5-6-2020) in Bush Park, Salem, Oregon. This is my first experience taking pictures of squirrels with this camera setup. I agree with you---the 4th pic looks more like a Cinnamon Teal (after looking at pics on the internet).
