This has been an excellent thread to read. It is obvious that many of you understand masking.
Some of you see it as a simple process that you learned in five minutes. That's great for you.
However here is my conclusive opinion, which by NO means is intended to reflect negatively on those folks who have stepped up to share and teach.
Wisdom: To revel in what we can do; what we understand. We must also accept that there are mathematical, scientific processes, and events in life, that our mind will never comprehend. A wise person knows when to stop pursuing those processes and move on.
A wise teacher knows that their knowledge of a given subject cannot be imposed on everyone. They understand that no amount of explanation, by any given method, or process will cause their pupil to understand, when the pupil's mind is not created to absorb, envelop, and use such knowledge.
A wise pupil knows when to find another path to attain understanding; or when a path to specific knowledge has come to an inescapable end.
What do I take from this??? Simply that my mind will never understand layer masks. My brain just doesn't work in a way that any of the process makes sense.
What to do next for me. Use selection tools, gradients etc., and be satisfied and grateful that I can make it work for a result that pleases me.
The point is... the thread was not wasted on me. People are enthused, willing to try again. And I believe that is the purpose of this forum.
Thank you guys, for your input.
@bsprague, yes this is exactly what I am saying :)
@minneiv, I still do not fully understand layers.
So... it was worth a try one more time, but I will just have to accept that I cannot wrap my brain around this process.
AS it has been said... we all learn differently. There are always solutions... just as there are many paths to the same truth. I have learned to use selections that blended and otherwise altered to produce similar, but by most standards; substandard lol.
I will just have to accept this truth, and work with what I am capable of understanding, and be satisfied.
yes I have Linda, but to no avail. I just can't seem to find a TUT that explains it to me so that I can understand it. AS I said in my OP I am at a crossroad where I am considering pretending that this option does not exist :)
I understand that Linda, I know what the process is, but it seems that I just do NOT understand how to use this tool.
I am kind of ay a place where I figure it is one of those "roadblocks" where I just have to find a way of getting around it by convincing myself that it is just NOT an option.
I know a lot of us use Photoshop, and other software for post processing effect and so on, but I have to ask. Is there some kind of secret to understanding masking and using masking????
I have photoshop and corel paintshop pro. I totally gave up on understanding masking in Corel and I have tried masking in photoshop with pretty much zero success.
Is masking REALLY worth all the hype about it??? Or is it just a toy for graphic effect.
What do you all think???

haha.... not the north pole... Reno NV.... the high desert can be bitterly cold in the winter
Thanks for your comments guys.... much appreciated.
Where did I live before I retired.... aaah jeeeze… all over the place.
Born in Sydney Australia, moved to the USA in 1980, worked and lived in California and then Nevada
Moved to Seattle to retire so the wife and I could be near our son and his wife who also live here in Seattle
I guess I was wrong..... I DO like it tho… particularly since I don't have to worry about how to get to work in this. Just grab a cup of coffee, an apple cinnamon muffin... a camera... and chill lol. and If I am feeling adventurous … put boots on... take a spare battery for the camera... and stomp through that snow.
Every day I look AROUND me... aka straight ahead.... today I felt looking up at that endless blue expanse above me.
Well we all got hit with a major snowfall here on Monday morning. Felt bad for all the folks who had to get to work in that mess. 10 inches of snow at my house. According to my neighbors, this much snow in one storm has not happened for many years. And these pics were before it REALLY started snowing lol.
HAHA a bottle of hand sanitizer.... some imagination.... and it is multiple universes in a … bubble? bottle??
HAHA.... it IS an issue when it is 38 degrees outside and she wants to sit in an open window. AND we are talking the bathroom window here.... so it is not exactly a clear window. She wants to look out and scare off any other cats that wander onto her territory.
With camera on F22 and off cam flash, I get.... this.
#3 is spectacular. Beautiful bright colors, and such clarity... WOW.
wow.... amazing photos. I love watching birds of prey in flight.... they are like little jet fighters
