IF Nikon had made the Z 400mm f4.5 an F mount lens I might be a Nikon user with the D500 ! BUT, they did NOT ! 8-( ......and, Canon has no plans of making a 400 R lens

No, but they did make a 500 f5.6 pf lens and boy howdy does it work well on a D500!

I currently am using a z8 and z6ii but am hanging on to the D500. I would like to go all in for mirrorless but Nikon so far hasn't built a replacement for the D500.

I’m with you except I also have a D850. The dilemma is that the D500/850 are the top of the DSLR camera tier so you know no new models will be forthcoming. If you migrate into the mirrorless world you will be tempted to upgrade every several years as camera technology advances. We’re already stuck in that situation with computer technology. The other half of the dilemma is that the old f-mount lenses we’ve lusted after for so many years are now discounted and readily available. So does moving to mirrorless mean you will take better pictures than if you had used a similar DSLR system? I doubt it, especially if you are skilled in using the system you currently have. Moving to mirrorless does mean that perhaps your keeper rate will increase and you may make fewer exposure errors based on the WYSIWYG factor of electronic view finders in mirrorless cameras. Despite everything I’ve said, what am I going to do? Well, I’m already eyeing Nikon’s release of the Z6iii and having a difficult time deciding which camera to sell…. And so it goes.

Hope is a survivor! She has returned for the last 8 winters to feed on the resident goose and duck population here at Canyon Lake. We call her “Hope” because last winter we photographed her dining on goose carcasses that died of avian flu and we hoped she would survive that pandemic. If you take a close look at her (we say “her” because she dwarfs her male companion by about a third in stature) you may notice her beak is malformed. Some theorize she suffered a gunshot wound that removed a portion of her upper beak. No one really knows but her distinctive beak means, along with her size, she is easily recognized even in flight. These photos were shot on 22 Dec…please enjoy…

Traveled Wind Cave NP and Custer State Park on Tues looking for coyotes and/or eagles. Buffalo were plentiful but there was no snow to get any artful pictures. No eagles were in evidence either but there were four different coyotes hunting the prairie dog towns. Each coyote sighting was very brief, disappearing the moment we stopped the car. This was the best and longest sighting from which I managed the following picture: enjoy!

Have fun.
Not sure what the big deal about PF is though.
Diffractive lenses are nothing new and used by most lens makers today. In fact long before Nikon thought of using them they were in use.

Were they? I know they’re used in Lighthouses but other than a few Nikon primes and the Canon 400 DO and now the new Canon 200-800….? I understood such lenses were very difficult to grind and polish. Have these problems been technologically overcome and we will see more use in the future? I’ll have to fire up the Google machine to research!

Now that most of our Osprey have migrated, the smaller migratory species are passing thru South Dakota to their wintering habitats. Here are some photos of recent arrivals. Please enjoy…

Our Canyon Lake Osprey are now fledged and have learned to get in and back out of the water. Now they have the month of September to learn to fish for themselves. Migration usually occurs in early October.
