I use dreamhost too since 16 years ago. Never had an issue and the price has never changed since!

Tech support has been pretty good too. I've been using their Dream Objects storage services for wordpress backups, works great.

I have a couple of websites, on Weebley. They are free if you don't use your own domain. You can do anything you want with the layout, it's all drag and drop.

Teachers at my school love Weebly - they all say it's very easy to use.

I travel extensively. Currently I post my photos on Facebook with a short story (blog?) about the day/event or whatever the photo series is about. I then caption each photo with a story or explanation about what the photo is of. Usually I post about a dozen photos. For example on a recent trip to Antarctica I did a story about the mornings excursion with photos, then a day or two later I would post the afternoons excursion. As you can imagine, having someone go back to my Timeline on Facebook to see my photos is very awkward. They need to scroll down experiencing the trip backwards and then sorting out the different days experiences from other photos I have posted along the way. Some examples of captions attached.

What I am searching for is a Website that will let me easily create a category for say Tibet, Antarctica, Cuba, Chile, etc.... with then my stories and multiple captioned photos. So far the only site I have seen that actually advertises the ability to caption photos is SMUGMUG. Anyone with experiences with SMUGMUG or other sites that let you showcase your travels or photos in this manner. If you wish to share your site for an example that would be excellent. Thanks in advance everyone.

Wordpress powers roughly 1/3 of the worlds websites. You can create a free website at the above site. You are limited to the plugins they offer through the free service but Wordpress has basic image gallery functions built in, offers SEO Search Engine Optimization if you want searches to find you out, facebook integration plugins, advanced image gallery plugins, and WAY more.

The catch is it's not as simple as facebook - you need to learn a little bit about pages and posts, uploading media to the media library, etc. In other words it sort of splits the difference between hand coding your website and holding your hand 100% like Facebook does.

It does allow you to create categories and subcategories for your posts/pages - you can also create a specific page for a specific trip to organize the viewers voyage to follow your voyage.

I use Dreamhost so I have total control over my wordpress installations allowing me to install any plugins I want to use. The free service in the link above has limitations but it's a good place to start and may be all you ever need.

I am thinking about installing a new processing program and putting it on my external hard drive because of space issues. If I do, will Lightroom, on my internal drive, recognize it as a plug-in? I have heard that it probably will not. Does anyone have any experience with this situation?

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see any replies address the "plug-in" point - I don't think Lightroom will care if it's not there when the drive is disconnected, the additional feature just won't be available. You can put plugins anywhere you like and point LR to the location. I like to have a folder named LR Plugins for smaller plugins I install.

Though I agree it's desirable to have software on the local hard drive it will work just fine when installed on a removable drive. Thunderbolt drive are by far the fastest available so go that route if you can (or USB C if that's on your particular model).

You can boot from a USB Flash drive if you wanted and just use the internal drive for file storage - not going to get your best performance but your Mac won't care if you don't...

.....Why don't Adobe offer a simpler version that focuses more on photo editing and charge less for it? Because it would highlight the fact that with Lightroom the customer is paying that premium price tag mostly for the catalog capabilities.

premium price tag? When I was purchasing version upgrades I was getting it for $80 a year and then buying PS Express for another $60 (as I recall) when each would annually go on sale. Sometime I got it through the School I worked at for the discount rate but I think full price was something like $120 - I was thrilled with the low price compared to $600 (or more) for Photoshop...

When the subscription of $10 a month came along it was an easy switch as I was spending roughly that for the 2 packages every year anyway... AND I get the full Photoshop package in the bargain though it's power is mostly wasted on me :)

I have 6 of the Yongnuo RF603 triggers - what I love about them over the other options is they're all identical - all of them can work as either a flash trigger or a remote shutter release (or both at the same time). You can put one on the hotshoe mount of your camera, connect the cable to the camera remote port then with the 2nd remote a half press of the button works just the same as a half press of the camera shutter release button (unless you're using back button focus) and a full press releases the shutter. You can also put a 3rd remote under a flash unit and the one mounted to the camera acts as BOTH a remote shutter release and the master for the remote flash at the same time. They've also made the effort to keep their models cross compatible with each other. Cost is about $32 a pair but for $80 you can get a set that supports iTTL for the remote flash. I haven't tried this but I believe you can use the remote trigger connected to an off camera flash and press the button to release the camera.

It would bee nice if you could put your library on the shared drive (for example, NAS). LR uses SQLite database which is single user database so they don't let you place the library on the shared drive. I interchangeably us desktop and laptop and have to import new pictures that I processed on the laptop as a catalog and then import it on the desktop. Having the library on the network drive would eliminate that. Of course it'd complicate things like dealing with images opened on multiple client machines.

Another wish would be to be able to open multiple libraries at the same time. Now it seems you hav to close one library to open another. I wish I could have two open and compare them.

I've placed my library on a shared volume with no problems, I never ever opened the catalog on more than one machine at a time but LR lets me store my library wherever I want. Another way you could accomplish this would be to save your catalog within your local Google Drive folder (or sharepoint of your choosing) which would then be synced to your Google Drive cloud and then synced to your other editing station - again, only ever use one at a time and I would expect at least a 1 minute delay for the sync to occur.

I have waited to see if anyone else would bring up Lightroom's lack of tethering functionality. Compared to C1, LR just doesn't cut it. If you do any studio work or macro work tethering is a godsend. The ability to fine tune focus and control your camera from your desktop or laptop really does improve your workflow. All you can do in LR is see your image and trip the camera's shutter. If you could pass this on to Adobe it would be greatly appreciated.

I use tethering with LightRoom.... I'll admit 4 years ago it was painfully slow compared to Capture 1 but they have increased the speed quite a bit. I absolutely agree Capture 1 is probably the best tool for tethered capture and without question better than LR but LR is "good enough" for what i'm doing

i'd like to have a "save button" so you can make changes and save it W/O printing or exporting

Thank god we DON'T have to do that.... LOL I absolutely love that I DON'T have to save, I just move from image to image, make the edits I want to make when I'm done with the batch, they get exported directly to Zenfolio or a disc for customers. All these other software packages, Open, Edit, Save, Close, then repeat for every single image. If you're lucky you want to make the same edits to all the images and you could build a macro but I still like the way LR works

my first thought given you said the catalog had to be rebuilt and access is slow - you may be looking at a failing drive. A corrupt database could just be that, a corrupted file which can happen. Slow drive response could be from the drive needing to make numerous attempts to read some (or all) of the data on the drive. Both of those symptoms together increases the chance your drive is failing, not a certainty but certainly a possibility. Do you have a backup? If not, stop EVERYTHING else you're doing with the drive and make a copy of anything you want to keep to a different drive... just an alarmist point of view :)

The title references image stabilization but the question says auto focus... isn’t that 2 distinct functions? You can obtain focus but you’re still shaking the camera. Why would stabilization cease functioning just because the subject is in focus?

I've use an 80-200 2.8 nikon for a good number of years and finally purchased not a new Nikon but a new Tamron 70-210 2.8 and WOW! I tripled the number of usable image just from more accurate focus results. I don't know that image quality is any better with in focus images but the upgrade was well worth it!

The Tamron tripod shoe sucks though...
