I use it, but know that filters will make a difference. I ended up pitching all of my lower quality filters for better test results. Do a test with and without a filter to see if it changes the offset. The aperture sharpness test is useful also since the test to determine the focus offset is done on the widest aperture.

while scrolling thru facebook this morning i ran across an ad for softwaredepots.com. They have photoshop download for 50 bucks and lightroom for 40. They are advertised as full retail software. Anybody have any experience or thoughts other than buyer beware?

Ok... So at 8:20 this morning you posted on here, asking for help. Then, at 5:10 this evening you thanked everyone for their help, and also informed us that you had pulled the trigger, and got a used camers, and lens.

I am assuming that you did not follow any of the very good suggestions posted here, and went ahead and bought from a business that many here have never heard of, And from what I have read, their sales practices may be quite suspect. You were even directed to a couple of very highly rated companies(B&H, Adorama, and Hunts). Please inform us where you decided to "pull the trigger". I, for one am very curious.

All that being said, if this comes back and bites you on your tail, it is totally on you...You have no ground to stand on, to complain someone here gave you bad information....

I really hope this deal works out for you, but, you were warned.

Sorry to give the impression that i didn't follow advice. I bought used, from a reputable store frequently mentioned on this site.

Thanks for the help. Looking for something smaller to bring on vacation in december and time to get to know it. I pulled the trigger today on a used camera and lens. Hope i made a good decision. Again, thanks!

anybody have experience with njaccessory.com? I'm looking to dip my toe in the mirrorless world. A camera is listed with a USA warranty. I can't find any reference to grey market. This camera is selling there now for what it was selling for a month ago deeply discounted by other retailers. Any help appreciated!

I bought the Lenovo at Costco and it has everything you need. I paid $50 more and Costco is the only place you can get that configuration and lesser equipped models cost more any place else.

last month I bought a Lenovo legion Y545 from Costco for about $1100 tax and shipping. Take a look at the specs, I think Costco is the only place you can get this configuration right now. The computer alone was 1049, 150 cheaper than the price now, so I pulled the trigger. I really like this thing!

to close off this topic- thanks for the labeling suggestions. As far as FoCal is concerned, let's just say that a filter can really affect results. I have even retested using no filter, another filter, and a 1.4X teleconverter. Wish me luck on my next vacation photos, and thank all of you for your input.

It’s FoCal. Without seeing your curves, I would guess that one thing you’ll find in common with all your lenses is that the acuity starts to drop somewhere between f11 and f16 due to diffraction. On the other end, some are sharpest wide open while some are sharpest several stops down. If you want to label them, you could put the sharpest aperture and the lens type on the lens cap with a label, BUT, in truth, it probably won’t matter. Why? Because you’ll probably make your aperture decision based on the DOF you want to achieve, rather than where the lens is sharpest, and secondly, the acuity probably doesn’t vary more than 10-20% across a couple of stops unless you get near the point where diffraction sets in.

If I may ask, what measurement did you see that makes you feel that the 200-500 is defective at the long end? Is the suggested calibration out of the adjustment range?

it was focal, and yes the suggested measurement was +32, my camera can be set up to +20

Btw, you should calibrate with wide open aperture and pay special attention to the camera setup including single point focusing, covering the viewfinder, correct distance to the target, target square to the camera and well lighted.

did all of the above. I am going to try again without a filter and also on my crop sensor camera. I didn't know the software would let you test at anything other than wide open.

"I suspect you are using Reiken FoCal (not Reical... never heard of that)..."

And people keep saying spelling in not important. To h*** with that idea. Is Focal Press OK with this as well?

reiken focal became reical in my confused mind- my bad!

at 500 mm it calculated the theoretical fine tune offset to be +32. The camera only goes to +20.

hello fellow hoggers! My question concerns how to label a lens for optimal f stop as determined by Reical. I Need a way to label each lens in a non-destructive way. Also, Reical determined that there was something wrong with my Nikon 200-500 lens at the long end. Now I've got to figure if I want to send it to them for repair!. Thanks for the suggestions!
