I seem to recall that the catalog listing for Sears radial arm saw that I bought ~50 years ago said something like "1/4 HP motor produces 1.5 HP." All of their stationary tools had that kind of description. Advertising has always contained a lot of fantasy.

I have a remote key fob for my car, which I wear around my neck on a dogtag chain (along with a door key and a pill bottle with one dose of my daily 8 pill regimen.) I'm retired, and now only wear ties to weddings and funerals, so the keys hang inside my shirt. Still have to think about the wallet and phone, but at least the keys are taken care of. And if for some reason I DO forget, I can't get into the car without going back to find 'em.

< snip > I suspect financial constraints influenced the design. The people who demanded those constraints are now out of the picture, and someone else has to come up with $ millions to rebuild the bridge.

I've read that the original plan was to build a tunnel, and work had actually begun on approaches to a tunnel when somebody decided they could save money if they built a bridge instead. (Would be interesting to know if perhaps it was a bridge builder who wasn't going to participate in the tunnel work who got to a decision maker with a bridge-is-cheaper proposal.) So yes, financial savings were behind the original decision to build a bridge, and (I assume) are always present during the design stage of any construction project.

I wonder why we didn't hear about this stuff ten years ago like we do now? Is it because maintenance was more careful or was it because the manufacturers gave a rib about their product and not as much about their bottom line?

I'd guess that a panel falling off a plane that has been in service for more than a few months is far more likely to be the fault of someone in maintenance than the manufacturer.

I recently bought a 2TB USB hard drive to use for backup and transfer of files. It's thinner than a deck of cards and just slightly larger in the other directions, so shirt pocket size for at least some shirts. It's a Western Digital My Passport, $70 at a variety of sources. (A 4TB is just a bit over $100.) Came second day, same as Amazon Prime would have, but I got this one from B&H with their PayBoo card and got sales tax credited back.

This is a spinning disk, and while it writes faster than similar models in the past it's not as fast as a SSD would be. But a 2B WD My Passport SSD is $160, and since the duty cycle will be write occasionally/read occasionally, the old tech is good enough for my purposes. YMMV, of course.

Moonrise over Hernandez is a classic. And its capture was an unplanned, serendipitous event. Ansel happened to be driving by in the evening, on his way to his destination when he saw it, slammed on the breaks, climbed on top of the car and took the picture, just in time. A moment later would have been too dark.

This understates the effort involved in this capture, and the miracle that he pulled it off. Adams was using an 8x10 view camera at the time. He had a shooting platform on top of his station wagon, and a ladder to get up there, but taking this shot required setting up the tripod (8x10 tripods are big, heavy beasts, and I don't think his had a ball head so it had to be leveled with the legs only) on the roof, then setting up the camera (8x10 cameras are big, heavy beasts) and getting it aligned and focused, the shutter and aperture set for the shot, then loading the film (ever handled an 8x10 sheet film holder? They're big, heavy . . . ) Admittedly this was equipment Adams was intimately familiar with, so he would have handled the setup as efficiently as possible, but all of it had to be gotten up onto the platform in the first place.

I believe he has said he tried for a second shot, which would only have involved inserting the dark slide on the first side of the film holder, removing and reinserting the holder for the second side (assuming it was a 2-sheet holder), removing the dark slide and taking a second shot. All of which would have taken only a few seconds compared to the initial setup. But the light was gone from the crosses by that time, so he didn't take it.

I have a small matted (official) print of Moonrise in my darkroom - a gift from my Air Force roommate who was a lifetime photographer too. And our art museum did an Adams show many years ago - they were even more stunning when displayed and lit in that environment.

And I've read that the earliest representation of Mickey Mouse finally ran out of copyright coverage. But the movie and music industries pay fortunes to Congresscritters to keep extending the copyright protection for their products, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it extended again in the future.

I think he's done several of those. I remember one where he led the spammer down a long back and forth rabbit hole about not transferring any money to the designated bank unless he got a free toaster out of it.

If I lived near #13 I think I'd find another way up and down the hill. Especially at night.

That's my attitude. If it's really for me and it's important, they'll leave something on the answering machine or voicemail. If they don't, then it wasn't for me, and if it actually was for me then it wasn't that important.

I was in the business since before ERISA and I hadn't heard that one. (Well, I've been retired for 20 years or so, but still . . . ) Great one.

This article on the increase in rainfall makes me wonder. When it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, was that due to aerosols, or was it due to Climate Change? 😁

Everybody knows it was due to SUVs. They just didn't have the words for it in Hebrew. ;-)
