Great Idea Dundee. I'm taking my camera down memory lane.

May I call you "Crocodile"? :)

Certainly Shutter Bugger. I am a great fan of Paul Hogan.

Sad to see that he and Linda have split up. Where's a "Donk" when you need one? :D :-D

Some time ago a fellow UHH member suggested that we should photographically document our Hometowns as they are today.
So many towns are changing rapidly and elements of our history are disappearing.
One fellow UHH'r has begun to document his hometown for that very reason. His home is Doncaster, S. Yorks in the UK.
Ian Barber has already shown, in his postings on the UHH site, that he is a master of B/W photography and his "Doncaster Today in Black and White" is further confirming that.
I would urge you to take a look at his site and it may well inspire you to do something similar. We are all recorders of history, and that should not be lost.

there was a mivie about how they developed the procedure for this and the attack. Pretty good movie.

The movie "The Dam Busters"; the designer Dr. Barnes Wallis. When dropped, they destroyed the Ruhr valley dams and subsequently flooded the whole Ruhr valley and the German munitions factories and steelworks.

Good, dragonking. Been here 23 years now but formerly from Doncaster, South Yorks as is Ian Barber.

Try: ianbarberphotography.co.uk

That is his site and should show you his portfolios on Whitby.

Hi,
The DSLR I chose was Nikon D5200. My reason is the good reviews it got and the articulated screen. I got used to that type of screen with my previous Panasonic FZ150 and didn't want to loose it. I have also bought a selection of lenses.
I can still get exposure & focus wrong. The answer I have found is adjust and take more pictures. You can always delete those you aren't happy with. I know it's cheating but you might as well take advantage of the technology.
Regarding Whitby, I only visit there because I know it well and I think it's photogenic. I always take a lot of shots there. I can't answer your question as I,ve never lived there but it must be great if your into photography as long as you can dodge the Vampires.

You should check out fellow UHH member Ian Barber. He also is enamored of Whitby and spends a lot of time there with some amazing photos produced.

Just joined forum and and just realized no one shoots sony ,a great camera for the money.

rusty01 don't despair. Last time I checked there are over 259 Sony shooters on UHH. I shoot an A300 and have a number of fine Minolta lenses that work perfectly with my A300, including the legendary "beercan" 70-210 f4 lens.
My main flash is a Minolta 5600HS which also works perfectly with full TTL communication.
Back in the day Minolta always kept its glass manufacture 'in house' when others like Canon and Nikon were farming it out. When Sony took over Minolta, they very wisely employed all the original lens designers from Minolta.

Great news! I hope your son does well with his heart and any other health needs.

Thanks, Wilson. Thankfully, the new heart valves are made from hardened carbon and rated out to 100 years if taken care of with blood thinners. We were fortunate, though. On an echocardiogram it was discovered that his ascending aorta was enlarged due to the problem with his valve, and they had to replace the ascending aorta along with the valve. Essentially it was a developing aneurysm and was dangerously large when they did the surgery. I'm sure God was watching over him again as he was especially when he as 13 and had his second surgery.

I agree that the Minolta lenses are very good and very cheap. I have done extensive research and here is my list of Minolta lenses. All are very sharp and great color.

70-210 f/4.0 Beercan lens - better than my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L lens.
35-105 /3.5-4.5 with Macro
100mm f/2.8 Macro - this lens is so sharp you don't dare use it for portraits.
135mm /2.8 again very sharp and great color - love this for portraits

50mm f/1.2 extremely sharp
50mm f/1.4 extremely sharp

Tamron Lens 17-50 f/2.8 This lens stays on my camera 90% of the time, very nice lens and sharp throughout it's range and at any f/ stop.

Yes I agree. Correction, sorry, I listed my Beercan as 70-200 it is of course 70-210 as said above.

Go on ebay ,look for Minolta lenses .The one true " beercan " is the 70-200mm f4, other lenses not stricktly beercan but do come within that quality range are the 24-85mm a/f f3.5-4.5 macro, the 35-105 a/f f3.5-4.5, macro and the incredible value 35-70mm f4 macro which is a cracking little lens.
To get some user reviews go on the internet, a good site is "alpha mount world".
I would say you could get good examples of all these lenses together for a lot less than £500.00. The 35-70mm f4 macro is incredibly cheap!

One of the reasons that Minolta glass was so good is that when all other makers; Nikon, Canon etc., were farming out their glass manufacture Minolta kept theirs "in house."
They had brilliant glass designers, so much so that when Sony took over Minolta, they retained all the Minolta lens designers and they are still at work today, designing Sony lenses.
As such, the old Minolta lenses still on the aftermarket are extremely good value.
I have the true Beercan Minolta 70-200mm F4 lens which I got from a fellow UHH'r and it is a beautiful sharp lens, even at some 20 years old.
