The old fashion way.

One of the endpoints of the old-fashioned way is death or severe injury.

No facemasks either !

I would require no masks working elevated for safety reasons

the Canon RP, with the kit lens. Under $1250. This is not an also-ran, this is acclaimed as a great camera - it is full frame, 26+ MP sensor with a good lens for food (Close focus 5-8 inches)

I would go into the comments and ask the photographer to explain - replace conjecture with facts.

I would think a normal trinity of lenses: Something wide enough for shooting on-board activities, and downtown Skagway and Juneau,(17-40 F:4) a walkaround (24-105 F:4 L) and the longest lens you can hand hold (Canon 100-500 or Sigma 100-600 ) and maybe a 1.4 - 2.0 TC. perhaps a walking stick/monopod - most of your shooting will be handheld, you can present a more stable platform shooting from the deck of the ship by allowing the decks to roll under you

Of course, if you used this trip as an excuse for the R5 with the RF versions of the above lenses, you will benefit from the 8 stops of stabilization and the ability to focus on the eye of a gnat. :)

When measuring the effectiveness of respirators, originally, a chemical called Dioctyl phthalate was used. the reason this chemical was used was that blowing an air jet across the surface - or through a nebulizer and allowing the airborne particles to age for 1-2 minutes would result in a very tight dispersal of particle sizes - very useful for scientific work. the mean particle size was measured to be 0.3 +/-0. 3 at 95%CL. Thus when challenging filters with DOP, you could measure the concentration on the upstream side and the down stream side of the filter and determine the effectiveness. Thus, a HEPA filter (P-100) was measured to stop 99.97% of all particles 0.3µ or larger. because of the DOP size profile, nothing could be said for particles of 0.2, 01 or smaller µ size. This is how the 0.3µ became the standard. Since then, in the 70s, it was discovered tha DOP is carcinogenic, and it is not nice to challenge people with a known carcinogen, so Corn oil and other materials are now used in place of the DOP. We have learned that the HEPA efficiency actually increases down to about 0.1µ particle size, however, the standard set in the weapons testing industry during the mid 50s has stuck with us.

Most industrial airborne particulates, other than smokes and fumes, are larger than the 0.3µ and particles in this size range and smaller ones are buoyant enough to be immediately exhausted, even from deep lung.

All that to say that a N95 respirator is sufficiently effective for particles down to about 0.1µ to be worth the effort to wear the mask, provided.....

The majority of exposure for respirator wearers comes during donning and doffing, so

Wear your mask
Wear your mask right
Don't be adjusting your mask continuously

Keep your hands off your Frigging face!

I would bet on a light kerosene or gasolene, something with sufficient volatiles. A century ago, gasolene would have had more low end volatiles because of the simple distillation process. If you just opened the cap on a warm day, the rapid escape of very light end product could have spontaneously ignited.

I assume the viewfinder was working at that time?

when you raise your eye to the camera, the evf turns on and the rear screen turns off. Many times when you go to change the focus point or in some other way get you hand or even a finger near the evf, it will swap views on you. I suspect that a camera strap would do it as well, but I never use a strap.

We stopped by the park to see how much water had left the river, and I heard the whistle a mile or so down the tracks.grab the camera and go.

You obviously are using a large light bucket; you may want to share your equipment list for this shot.

It is beautiful - almost perfectly perpendicular!

I agree with CHG CANON. you have the equipment, but it is obvious you missed class the day they discussed portraits. Put that 85mm on your camera and don't take it off for two months!

Set your aperture for the background you want - f:1.8 for a soft bokeh filled background, f:8 or higher for a crisp background.

Set your shutter and or your ISO to control the light balance between your subject and your background - bright background, slow shutter speed, darker background higher shutter speed.

set your light and your reflectors to control the light on your subject

Now, focus on the closer eye and shoot.

When you are not behind the camera, sit in front of your TV or computer and check out the massive number of free videos by top level portrait photographers on how to shoot portraits - indoor, outdoor, fashion, environmental, you may not find more than 1000 hours of quality videos out there.

Matthew Brady used a camera with no autofocus, no image stabilization, no light meter, and only manual settings, and we still look at and admire his photos 160 years later! It is not about the equipment.
