We do seem to overlook the ADVANTAGES of our Smartphones:
1. Instantly communicating ALL images to the CLOUD. [BACKUP]
2. IMMEDIATE Audience.
Instantly email/post our work to a wide audience.
3. Built in location information for each shot.
4. More acceptable at performance venues. Many ought right BAN "Professional Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses"
5. Less threatening form factor for Street Photography.
6. Built-in PP capabilities often FREE!
7. Wide range of Camera Options on current Models.
8. Lightweight & portable.
9. Availability of rugged cases
[Otter Box, etc]
10. Wide range of cost-effective accessories [tripod mounts, lenses etc.]

Anything I missed?

The big one that I see and hear more and more is that photos taken with a true dedicated camera look funny to the younger generation who are used to seeing photos from a smart phone. That sharpness of focus with heavy detail and a blurred background and foreground looks odd to them. Kinda looks like an old person took the photo. Lol.

Quick tip if you’re using an iPhone - the volume up/down buttons become shutter releases when using the camera. Much easier to hold steady when forced to use it because your real camera is at home.

The buttons are also the only way to take a pic with an iPhone under water. A feature I use often. Don’t try this with your “real” camera.

Apple Live Photos are typically taken at 15 fps. This does not explain your 1/2 second delay between frames. But it would explain choppy looking video. There is some discussion online that the fps may change (lower) based on lighting but I haven’t verified that. You can change the frame rate for video between 24,30 and 60 for desired smoothness of video but you can’t change the frame rate for Live Photos.

There have been some discussions on here about them. Try doing a search. But my number one piece of advice from using mine is to make sure you have the computing power to process and edit the videos.

Why do you think they would be better? It’s not expertise that limits Apple or Samsung, it is merely the size limitations of the lenses and sensors. A traditional camera manufacturer would be faced with the same. Plus they would have to catch up on computational photography tech.

To me, this is the biggest problem with iMac's Photos program. Apple's Photos is a database, not a file storage program. You can go in through Finder to Home to Photos. Then right hand click on Photos Library and click on "Show Package Content." All your jpegs are there.

Trouble is, because Photos is a database, it assigns it's own incomprehensible numbering/lettering system so you can't tell which jpeg is which. You can sort by date and that might help but it seems like Photos sets up it's own storage folders with random selections of jpegs in each. You'd have to open each folder.

If someone knows an easy way to find bulk, stored jpegs on an iMac (that were downloaded via Photos) and easily retrieve them, I'd love to know it.

This is why I import and store all my photos on my Mac outside of Photos in my own organized file system. Then only my best photos that I want to share get imported into Photos. I love Apple Photos for its sharing capabilities, and the editing is not bad. But not being able manipulate the files keeps it from being the primary filing system.

Chad, what improvements are you talking about? Remember, this camera will be used for manual focusing only.

Thanks,

Ben

Image stabilization is the big one. Being able to do uncompressed RAW is the other. This article goes over the differences.

My first digital was an Olympus Camedia 1.3Mp with the clam shell sliding door that opens to reveal the lens. I can't recall the price but I ended up trading in a couple of 35mm film cameras to be able to afford it. Great little camera at the time.

I had this same camera and have many great pictures of my young kids from it. I am glad I had it. I have processed a few of them through Topaz Gigapixel lately with nice results.

I recommend stepping up to the A7II for it’s many improvements over the A7. I have no complaints about using mine with vintage lenses except how fast it uses batteries. But that will be an issue with the A7 or A7II.

I have a bunch of cards and a bunch of cameras. I just pick up a card and put it into a camera. Never a problem. The camera makes a folder for itself.

I do the same Jerry. It’s probably not the best practice. But I have never had an issue doing this. I do make sure that I have transferred any existing files from the card to the computer first. But I have never had an issue where it overwrites or deletes any files left on the card. So I may have a card or several cards with Sony, Nikon and Olympus folders on it.

I know the people are not the subject here, but I don’t like how the denoise AI handles the people’s heads. It kinda flattens them into two dimensions. Earlier versions of Topaz did the same. But Topaz has made a lot of improvements in dealing with people’s heads and faces.

I don't think that is "AI".
The phone is just programmed to differentiate noise.

I agree that it is not A1 because it doesn’t learn to get better on its own. But it is doing much more than just eliminating noise. I recently used Apple’s night mode on a caverns tour. I would have needed a tripod and a lot more time for my other cameras to match the photos I got from my iPhone.

I have used both as action cameras primarily for video. I have also extracted some good stills from the videos. But I would not recommend them for general photography. Both are going to give you a very distorted view with the wide angle lens, especially the 360. The 360 has good software that will correct for distortion in post, but I would choose my phone over either one for traveling super light.
