Anyone having problem with new Camera Raw update opening in a too big window with most controls hidden beyond borders.

Just tried to open a raw file in PS CC and the damned window is supersized so most buttons not on screen. Cannot even close PS at that point or escape from CR. Regular non CR aspects of PS work fine, but CR is useless at the moment. Should mention this problem is on Windows laptop, not PC.

Just to rant on - Bad enough I am forced to relearn where everything is now located in PS, but this is making me furious. Spent 15 yrs learning how to work the software and now I have to think about pretty much everything I want to do in the “improved” version. Even the simplest tasks now require me to think about how to do them. Muscle memory rendered useless. Pain the ass and so far haven’t seen much in the way of improvements in new layout.

No problem on my iMacs. Are you using a PC or Mac? There could be difference on one version and not the other.
They are slightly different. I'm sorta going off of memory as I don't use Windows very often and Mac even less.

- Open file explorer and right click on the removable media (drive) and select Format
- At the bottom of the format window there is an option for Quick Format. Uncheck that option.

Both Quick and Full using this method are not 100%, and the big difference is unchecking Quick also checks the drive for errors.

You can also format using command line in Windows, but if you really feel like going that route, just google "format drive from command prompt" or something similar.

* Also *
Sorry forgot this after the fact. Make sure the file system you select in the format options is the same as what your camera recognizes. Most (not all) cameras use Fat32, but there are exceptions.

And....if you have a newish Canon or Nikon...The files and folders that the camera needs will be written to the card after you insert the card in the camera...the firmware does not [i]have[/] to go through the format procedure. Again...it's ok to format in camera, and it's ok not to...all personal preference.
I have both a Nikon D800 and a D90 for backup. Do either of them use Fat 32 or something else? I have never seen the flash card file format mentioned in any Nikon specifications.

I think those that see me write on this topic already know my stance, but I will add something a little shocking. If you do not understand file systems and don't work with them on a daily basis in some sort of IT related work or as a hobbyist in your personal time...it is a great idea to format in camera.

But as mentioned above, the logic doesn't quite fit with devices that are used by operating systems. Back when FAT32 was the file system for Windows, were you required to reformat a hard drive on a regular basis and wipe out the file structure for the OS and all data? Camera manufacturers did not redesign a standard file structure for the sole purpose of making some sort of proprietary form of FAT32 or exFAT.

Again...if that is your method...please continue to do so...nothing wrong with it. But I format once, unless there is an issue and it's part of troubleshooting.

John,

Do the deep formatting instructions in the article apply to Mac computers, is there a different procedure or must it be done on a PC only?

Okay Hedgehoggers, I need some help. I just bought a Pentax K1 Mk ii with battery grip. Beautiful camera but damn it’s heavy to be hanging around my neck all day on the chinsy strap that came with it. So, please suggest a better shoulder strap option. I’ve researched a bunch and it seems like a lot of them hang by the tripod mount-hole...this doesn’t seem like a great place to suspend all that weight. Thoughts? Thanks in advance, all.

I use a Cotton Carrier https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1345430-REG/cotton_carrier_686grey_ccs_g3_camera_harness.html for my D800s and D850s. You can also buy it for two cameras https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1345355-REG/cotton_carrier_147grey_ccs_g3_camera_harness.html.

The Cotton Carrier has multiple advantages over straps. First, the camera is carried close to your body centered on your chest when not in use so you do not need to worry about it as you would with a side strap where the camera can strike a solid object when you walk through a door or by a solid object. Your camera locks into the Cotton Carrier with quick release that allows you fast access and a safety strap between the Cotton Carrier protects your camera from drop damage should you loose your grip on it. A big plus is that it takes the load off your neck and places it on your body's midsection and equally on both shoulders.

I have used mine for five years and traveled extensively with it. I have found it to be a very good investment.

...while the ‘63 is nice...the ‘59 is a honey...looks like it could fly...

My mother had a 60 Bel Air and I had a 61 Impala convertible. It was very sharp; white with red upholstery. It was like a boat. The two happiest days of my life were the day I bought it and the day I sold it. There wasn't a garage or gas station it could go by without costing me a fortune in repairs. It was the most unreliable car I have ever owned and the most fun car I have ever owned. Since 1962 when I sold it, I have never bought another Chevy and I have never recommended one to anyone. The next car I bought was a Pontiac and since then I have owned every brand that GM made except the Saturn. I owned several Cadillacs, but just before I retired, I switched to a Buick La Cross. It is the best built car I have ever owned.

I'm now leaning toward the D850 rather than the D500. Same lens, though...24-120mm f/4.

You should also consider the f/2.8 24-70mm lens with the D850. Although it is heaver and larger than the 24-120mm, it is a faster lens and will allow you to use lower ISO settings that will reduce art affects. Also, because the D850 is a full frame high megapixel camera, you will be able to enlarge your images by cropping to an amazingly large size and make large prints (over 16" x 20) without noticeable loss of image quality. Effectively making it a 24-200mm, 300mm and more telephoto. It also has a higher DxOMark rating than the 24-120mm lens meaning it is sharper over its range and superior in other measurements.

That would be a terrible predicament, though.

I agree. I would am torn between keeping my D850 and f/2.8 24-70mm or trading it for a Z7 and the Nikkor Z f/2.8 S lens.
