There is nothing better than sitting on my deck watching hummingbirds fight over sugar water. To capture their beauty is even a bigger bonus. These were captured on my Canon Rebel T6s using the 100-400 L II IS lens using a wired remote and back button focus. Hoping to upgrade to a full frame some day.

I shot this the other day with the sun behind me. I have a Canon T6s crop sensor with the 100-400 L II lens. Since I had nothing but time to try and get a good shot, camera was on my tripod and I sat with a wired remote in my hand. Having had hand surgery 2 weeks ago, I cannot lift anything heavy for a few months. I always use back button focus so my focus is locked in. I also use AI servo with single point focus and shutter priority, auto ISO, and at least 1/1250.

I have set out 2 hummingbird feeders and am looking for settings advice to capture these birds feeding. I will be using a Canon T5i with an EFS 55-250 Lens. Conditions this week are due to be sunny. As it will be afternoon I will be watching, the sun should be behind me and I will be shooting from a covered porch. I am newer to DSLR photography so any help would be appreciated.

I have had my DSLR now for 2 years. I have a Canon Rebel T6s and with that I use a 100-400 L IS II lens. I was about 10 feet away from this hummer yesterday with my camera on a tripod and using a wired remote and back button focus. These were shot at 1/1250. I was standing in the shade and the sun was shining right on the feeder. The creamy bokeh background is actually the siding on our house.

Great action stopper. Your house color is really a great background. What was your shutter speed? Mahalo for sharing.
Shutter speed was 1/1250.

We put our hummingbird feeder out last week (NW Wisconsin) and finally yesterday, this little guy showed up. The lighting was perfect and I was in the right spot at the right time. Taken with my Canon T6s Rebel and my 100-400 "L" IS II USM lens. The creamy bokeh is actually the siding on our house.

I am currently in the process of trading some of my gear with this outfit. Received their prepaid FEDEX label yesterday and dropped off the package. Waiting to see how this turns out. I will provide an update when completed.

I decided to go with this company afterall. I received my prepaid FedEx label yesterday also. Will be dropping the package off at Walgreens today. I, too, will provide an update. This company offered me $100 more than B&H was offering so decided to go with them instead.

Has anyone ever sold their used lens to a company called mpb.com? They seem to give a little higher price than B&H. They also include a prepaid FedEx shipping label. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

As someone else noted that this Sigma lens is on sale today at B&H. I have the Canon 100-400 mk1 version and wondering if anyone has compared the sigma to the canon mk1 vs canon mk 2 lenses? Is it worth the upgrade and if so would you consider the Sigma over the canon mk 2 version? I'm considering a trade with my canon mk1 lens.

Thanks

Dave M.

I bought the Canon 100-400 L Mark II refurbished from Canon. Even though I can't compare it to any of the other 100-400 lenses, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Did you ever consider the discontinued Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM zoom lens made in Japan (or the one made in Taiwan - slightly less desirable)?? The cost: less than $150! Just make sure you order the right lens.

I ordered directly from Canon's refurbished site. One year warranty and 14 days to decide if I want to keep it or not. I really believe in their "L" lenses. I have noticed a huge difference with their 100-400 L Mark 2 lens that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

Thanks for your input though.

You are using a T6s that can use EF-S lenses?

Personally I wouldn't get any of the Canon 24-105s (there is also a non-L, STM version) to use on it. They just aren't all that great. The primary difference between the two L's is that the newer one has improved image stabilization and uses Canon's new Nano USM auto focus drive.

For use on an APS-C camera like the T6s, either the EF-S 15-85mm IS USM or the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM would be a better choice, in my opinion. Better image quality, better range of focal lengths for an APS-C camera (on the one hand) or a larger aperture (on the other hand), just as fast focus and just as good IS. Probably just as durable, too. (The new 24-105L still has to prove itself over time... the original wasn't all that durable).

If you were using full frame, I'd recommend the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM instead.

The T6s can use both EF and EF-S lenses. I will give the lens a try for 14 days and if not pleased, can send it back. I just wanted a little bit more reach (105) versus the 85. Thanks for your input.

I have the version I which is a great lens -but I keep reading that it has a manufacturing issue that one of the internal cables is prone to problems. So go with version II. Canon refurbished products are not discounted very much, but they are equal to if not better than brand new because they have been personally inspected to make sure that all functionality works.

Thanks. My camera and all my lens I've purchased through Canon. Love that they have a 14-day retur policy "in case" and they all have a one-year warranty.

Everybody's input has been greatly appreciated. I did order the version II.

I think it would make a fine "walk around" lens. I'd buy the version II over the I; it's kind of a no brainer since it's cheaper anyway. I love my 100-400 II also. I got mine from Canon as a refurb too. It's tack sharp. You'd think my example was with a macro lens but it's with that 100-400. I'm sure the 24-105 is a fine lens.

Thanks! I took this yesterday with the 100-400 L II. Love this lens. This too was refurbished.
