I see that no one mentioned extra batteries. Make sure that you have several fully charged extras, as the cold temperatures reduces the charge quickly. I was there a number of years ago at about the same time you're going, and can tell you that it was not as cold as I suspected, except when it got windy. When the wind blew, layered and with a parka, it was very hard to keep warm. I could not use the camera with thick gloves, but the thin ones that you wear under the heavy gloves give enough relief to press buttons and move lenses, as least for a short time. You will never see any other place like it. Have a great time and stay safe.

I went to Africa in 1973 (film cameras and lots of lenses). We would park close to them, and some would come over to the vehicle and lie in its shade. You could (should you be so stupid) reach down and pet them.. Our guide had to tell us to keep our arms inside the vehicle (it sounded ridiculous that he had to tell us that, but we all know people who don't think). He told us the story of a lady tourist who went for a walk by the river at night, and was killed by a leopard. It takes all kinds.
Let me ask this: How many of us go to the sites that provide customer complaints/lawsuits/and other information for physicians or attorneys (who provide services far more important than the purchase of cameras and ancillary photographic gear) or your securities broker to see what it was doing wrong (according to the client-and I phrase it this way because I was in the brokerage business for over 50 years and an arbitrator for customer complaints) before or even during us doing business with them? Just asking.

Hope your son continues to make progress. How did you stabilize your outfit on what seems like a pretty light/small tripod ($50)?
If you're using Creative Cloud, Adobe just came out with the 2017 versions of LR & Bridge (Not LR) and it seems to finally be printing OK. I just tried it this AM and it finally printed on my Epson Artisan 837.
