For me it is:
Study light.
Develop your eye to recognise "good" images.
Know your gear so you can capture what you see.

Any suggestions or worthwhile resources for understanding light and how it impacts photography?

Can a really bad quality picture also be looked as art? I proposed this question in "Birds in Flight" and the answer is overwhelmingly No for the pictures I used.

Now I'm trying to see if the perceptive is different based on group.

Is beauty really in the eye of the beholder or is bad just bad?

Thank You

My son called me today told me he is going to be purchasing new camera equipment and is planning on spending $9,000.00 for camera, lenses, filters, case, Mic and other misc items.
He asked me where l got my camera equipment from and told him B&H, but he was quoted to much money. Is there any other good internet stores to purchase camera equipment from at a good price? Has anyone used 42nd St. Photo, is there still a photo company on the west coast that does sales? I thought it was Seattle Photo l think?

I would like to hear from you on different places to purchase equipment from across the country with free shipping!

Bergen County Camera in Westwood, NJ. They are a family business that opened in 1980 and have survived in the backyard of the two big stores we all know in 'The Big Apple'.

Ask for Bob, Paul or John. But anyone of their Team can and will be very helpful. They actually have a focus session every Saturday morning at 9:30 for tips, tricks, photo topics, and discussion; with anywhere from 30 - 60 people attending. They care about your photography.

My son's little doggie is fading right before our eyes...been diagnosed with degenerative bone disorder, arthritis in his back and hips and Cushings...he's eating less and less. The vet has him on 3 meds to fight the symptoms. I know it's "that" time and I know it's sad, but do any of you know any comfort words?

He and his wife are expecting twins within the next two or three months and they are heartbroken about their four-legged friend they've had with them for nine years. It's a very difficult thing to talk to them about. I'm struggling with what words to say to comfort them...thanks.

I don't think there are words that can comfort in a time of great loss. I think the words you choose help by offering support and showing you care. They can also be tools to accept the loss and offer strength going forward.

I believe that pain is the price we pay for happiness/joy/pleasure. Sometimes you get the happiness before the pain and sometimes after. I also believe they are proportionate and in balance. The more you love someone the harder the loss. When I reflect on my most painful loss', whether a parent or friend, I try to remind myself of the joy I experienced that allows this pain to exist. Then I try to smile and tell myself 'it was worthwhile' and 'I am lucky' and a better person because of the experience. I say 'try', as it is not easy and works logically, not emotionally.

In this instance, being a rescue dog, the pain came before the joy for their four-legged family member. Your son and wife experienced the joy first. It can be all summed up in a simple question, maybe two. Was it worth it? Would you do it again? And follow up with ... in your words ... the pain you are feeling now is equal to the joy you gave your four-legged friend.

It is hard to know what to say, but say something. As the exact words will likely be forgotten, but your presence and compassion will not.

I hope this helps.

Meh, I wouldn't pay any attention to CR. I remember reading their review of a Corvette a few years back. Points were deducted for lack of a back seat, unsatisfactory trunk space, and poor gas mileage LOL.

I have a D7500 and am completely happy with it. I don't use it much now (my wife does though) and image quality is absolutely on par with the D500 - it's the same sensor so it should be! Use CR for things like toasters, use sites that specialize in cameras for camera reviews and info.

Speaking of which, here's my D7500 review:

Also, some images from the D7500:

While there, take a look at Steve's book 'Secrets To The Nikon Autofocus System' and give some serious consideration to purchasing a copy (should you choose Nikon). I did, on advice from other UHH'ers, and have been very happy. It is easy to understand, has a logical conversational flow (building on a foundation) and if you watch any of his videos you too may hear his voice as you read the book.

I have never packed a camera body or lens in checked luggage on a flight. But I have packed an expensive ($1500) pair of binoculars, a nearly $1800 Glitzo tripod and a number of computer accessories. And nothing has ever been stolen. Come to think of it I don't know anyone who has had anything stolen from their luggage. I have had U.S. TSA inspectors open my bag twice and leave little cards telling me about it, but they never removed anything. So why is this the most common piece of advice given on the subject of air travel?

[quote=Photocraig]Ok guys, I get that there is a great powerful "Catalog" function called Lightroom.... around the catalog for 3 years and I STILL can't find stuff......

When troubleshooting, I try to start with the simple things first. For example: when the answering machine isn't working, check to make sure it is plugged in before taking it apart. Using that approach, look to see if you moved pictures to different folders or renamed the folders outside of Lightroom; possibly with Explorer or Finder. Once you "ADD" files to Lightroom, any changes to the file/folder structure needs to be facilitated in Lightroom, otherwise Lightroom will be looking in the wrong location when called upon to view or modify the file/pic. I recently learned that the hard way when renaming folders.
