It’s a tough choice. You’ll find landscape (wide angles), bigger wildlife (telephoto) and small creatures and flowers (macro opportunity). You can’t bring 3?

Understanding that you have Canon gear, I'll still offer the suggestion of taking a look at the m4/3 systems. Although I also have Canon gear, I find that for BIF, the Olympus OMD E-M1 II with the Pana/Leica 100-400

I too am an Oly owner. What components of the image stabilization work with this combo? Camera obviously yes but does it have in-lens and does it work with Oly? Did a google search and couldn’t be sure. TX in advance.

I made a similar switch about a year ago (D800 to EM1MII. The only things that I miss are the dynamic range and low light ability. The things I like most are the lower weight and all my gear fits in my sling bags (body, 8mm fisheye, 12 to 40 2.8, 40 to 150 2.8, 300 4.0, extension tubes, flash). My D800 gear was requiring a backpack or suitcase or 2 and I was not using it. I typically print on metal and canvas at 16 x 20.

With my D800 I found that I had to keep the shutter speed up (>= lens size) even with image stabilization. To do this I set auto ISO and worked primarily in A or M.

Am I alone, or has anyone else weathered a purchase through the Olympus store? They are offering incentives to trade in gear for credits towards Olympus cameras and lenses. I sold my Canon kit--Olympus works through a third party, but the deal seemed fair to me--and ordered the OM-D E-M1 Mark II and two PRO lenses. The trade and new equipment were nearly equal.
However, my April 10th order still has not shipped the camera body. Lenses arrived within a week, but I heard NOT ONE WORD from Olympus--no thanks, no confirmation, no shipping date, no tracking. I had to dig deep to get to their Order Support; they apologized and said shipping problems were causing delays and it would be another week. Ten days later, I called again, got a second apology and was told there was a "maybe 1-2 week delay". To add insult to injury, B and H has been shipping the camera since April 19th. Yes, GAS is frustrating, and I can understand shipping delays, but not hearing from Olympus is insulting. The entire transaction could have been smoother. It is as if their left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.
Fortunately, I do have their old M-5 so I am able to continue shooting, with the new lenses. Thanks for listening. These counseling sessions do me so much good.

I had a very similar experience. I preordered the em1mk2 and several lenses. I had the lenses for many weeks before the body arrived. I emailed on and off because they never let me know the status. In fact on the site my order was listed as "complete" for over a month. Good luck. It is worth the wait though the points that they offer turn out to me about a 2% discount.

I am interested in what you come up with. I recommend you ensure that your adapter seals off light leaks from behind; that's always been an issue I had with adapting to petal lens hoods. I adapted my Cokin filter mount to the Panasonic 7-14, but I have to wrap a cloth around it to seal it. I use Cokin P filters (85mm). Unfortunately, they vignette on the Olympus below 9.5 mm.

What filter size are you designing for?

I would be willing to test, but I am leaving at the end of the week for 3 weeks in China. If you haven't straightened out the testing by then, contact me and I'll do it. But also, keep me in mind for your solution. I haven't been willing to invest in a solution for the Olympus, because it would require an expensive adapter and an upgrade to my filters (I have a bunch of 85mm, including the Tiffen long filters which cost a couple hundred each).

Good luck.

Thanks. I'll post my progress here. I just ordered my prototypes for the 8mm and the 7 to 14. We'll see how they come out. I may be crowdsourcing this to see how much interest there is.

Have a great trip.

Thanks. If all else fails I know that I can fall back to this option. If I succeed I will have a very economical option.

[quote=jcboy3]The lens has the following dimensions

Diameter at top of tall petal: 3.10"
Diameter at top of short petal: 3.09"
Diameter at base of sunshade: 3.08"......

Thank you for sending the information. I see that there are posts showing options for this problem already. If you are still interested I will be beginning design today and maybe have my first prototype off to the printer later this week. This will be a much more economical solution and for you, if you are willing to test, you will get to keep a working prototype.

I moved from Nikon to Olympus a few months ago. My newest lens is the 8mm fisheye. This lens and the 7 to14mm zoom do not accept filters. I am designing filter holders for the 8mm fisheye and would like to design one for the 7 to 14mm also but I will need help with this since I don't own that lens. The help I am looking for is this: I need the diameter of the lens at the distal end, the sunshade end and the depth of the sunshade (if it is like the 8mm the shade has the top and bottom petals of the shade are longer than the sides). I will also need to have you try it out for fit and function. You will get to keep the prototype that works.

Hi, I know that not all flights require checking your camera gear as luggage.....

I have never checked luggage however a photographer friend of mine advises that if you must then buy a starter pistol. This is considered a firearm. Place it in with your gear. Declare that you have a firearm. They will hand inspect your luggage and then seal it. He swears that it works. He only does this when absolutely necessary.

You asked about light gathering for the lens. Remember a 1 stop difference means that you have half (or in the other direction, twice) the light. As mentioned 3.5 is 2/3 of a stop difference from 2.8. Every stop "faster" is twice the light. F2 is twice the light of 2.8, 1.4 is twice that of 2 ........ Every stop "slower" is half the light.

If you are thinking of.checking the equipment consider buying a starter's pistol. They consider that a firearm. Pack it in with the equipment. You declare that you have it and they must hand inspect your luggage and then seal it.

I have used a flagpole holder a la marching band or color guard and put the foot of the monopod in that. It looks pretty dorky however very effective. It stabilizes the shot and holds the camera at the ready at eye level and prevents arm fatigue while holding a big lense.

It's not my original idea. I read about it about a year ago on uhh.
