I missed any comment on the archival value of B/W film based prints. That's the only reason I use it occasionally. Digital is great for learning the "exposure triangle". I just inconvenience a few electrons.

I shoot B/W film for archival purposes. I have 90 year old prints that are sharp and interesting from the perspective of seeing a different place in time. Hopefully my descendants will have this opportunity.

Been an interesting few years subscribing to UHH but its become far too vitriolic with members criticizing posts quite unhelpfully simply to boost their own over inflated egos. Suppose its only to be expected though in a country where children have the Constitutional Right to take guns to school to k**l their teacher and other pupils! Yes and elect a criminal con merchant as President.

Keep well those who do not fit this profile.

Cheers JohnR

I call BS on kids having a right to have guns - just flat out untrue!

What am I missing?

It all depends upon your workflow. I find it demands extra steps to do the same things as I did in Win 10. And for that I can discern no additional benefits.

When I started my laptop last night, I saw this pop-up in the bottom right corner: "Installing Windows 11." It was out of the blue - nothing about updating or upgrading. I'll start it today and see what version of Windows I have on it.

Maybe I did one false move, but I "got" Win 11 and frankly, hate it. A real time waster.

Are you definitely pressing the OK button to confirm format, not just the centre button in the menu control. ( Done that myself).

I also made that mistake.:(

I have a ton of old photos which are taking up too much space. Friends, can I get any recommendations for a high quality fast scanner? Must be Mac and PC compatible. Thank you in advance. Poto

I'm happy with my Epson V600 Photo scanner

I have a Mac that I just cannot get used to. I am going back to a Windows laptop. I am asking for help in which is best for photography, specifically. Especially how big space wise I should buy. I will be placing images on external hard drive but would still like to have a larger capacity laptop to hold edited images. I am interested in Dell or Lenovo.
If I decide to sell my Mac rather than give to a family member I will list on UHH.

My Lenovo has served me well

Folks - I raised this subject a few years back and thought I’d give it an encore. UHH has 2 sections for members to post pics - Photo Gallery and Photo Analysis and posting constructive criticism in the first is frowned upon. I think this rule does a disservice to photographers looking to up their game.

I often look at posts in the Gallery and too often see, sorry for the blunt language, just awful photos. I’m not talking about subjective matters. I’m talking about pics that are out of focus, poorly exposed, with wildly tilted horizons (not done intentionally for artistic purposes), badly post processed or overprocessed, poorly composed with telephone poles growing out of heads, etc. or any number of other technical (NOT subjective) flaws.

And most times, well meaning members post, “Great set”, or “Nicely done” or other “ attaboys” in an attempt to not hurt another member’s feelings. I see this as counterproductive and reinforcing bad technique by poster. I ask how is a member to develop better photography skills if, I again apologize upfront, technically terrible pics are displayed and followed by lots of gushing platitudes?

Last time I mentioned this, I was slapped down by numerous members who argue that unless a poster requests constructive criticism, nothing negative should be said. Ok - I’ll buy the “If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing” idea, but gushing over bad stuff does harm to the poster too. If the pics are bad, say nothing. Stop reinforcing bad work.

Just a suggestion to those posting to the Gallery in the future - think about soliciting criticisms so you can improve your work. Sure you will get many nasty, snarky and often incorrect replies from a certain subsection of members, but you will also get many great suggestions for improvement offered in a polite, constructive manner. I’ve been a photographer for 55 yrs and I welcome all well meaning and civil critiques. We are never too old to learn a new trick.

Anxious to see the replies to this rant.

Just a brief story. When floppies were king, I put a lot of files on them. Most of them are of no value to me now, but when I tried to view them to decide what to keep, about half of the floppies couldn't be read. Longevity can matter.

The floppies and any magnetic tape will degrade because the particles will move out of alignment due to "relaxation" of the polymer matrix in which the particles are embedded. That's why old VHS tapes, even when not played, turn crappy (sorry about technical terms:) Ditto cassette tapes.

The advantage of Blu Ray discs over DVD discs is capacity. The advantage of M-Discs over conventional discs is longevity. Conventional discs can deteriorate over time and are not considered permanent storage.

but otherwise, no distinct advantage of Blu Ray over conventional DVDs?

M-Discs are said to have a 1000 year life.

If you buy an external drive, format it exFAT. exFAT drives can be written to and read by Macs and Windows machines.

Is there a particular advantage to using a blue ray rather than a conventional CD DVD player?

Lots of pessimistic views today.....
We all produce and accumulate lots of 'junk', it is not entirely a bad thing for lots of it to turn to dust.
But we also produce some good stuff , stuff worth remembering. If we are selective it is not difficult to preserve our best stuff.
We get in trouble when we think that we need to save EVERYTHING.
A good place to start is making archival prints of our best work - things our family will value. Lots of prints can fit in a couple of archival calm shell boxes---- especially if we edit honestly.
