I recently removed the xqd card from the camera and copied files from it. Removed the card from the reader and inserted it into the camera. I tried to format the xqd card or the secondary micro SD card but the camera will format neither card. It wii store pics on the xqd card. Ant suggestion to fix this greatly appreciated. Do I have a setting in the menu that may be preventing the format to run?

Did you by chance remove the card with the camera ON, or remove the card from the reader without dismounting or clicking "safely remove device" on the computer?
On most computers they must be dismounted to properly close the file system on the card.
Simply unplugging a card "in use" can corrupt the card.

Is there a write protect tab on the card?

He can still write new pix to it.

Sometimes a last ditch before Nikon Service is reloading FW but this may be impossible given the problem with accepting the SD card. IOW, repair is imminent.

Is the card "locked?"

You may try formatting with your computer and then reformatting in the camera.

Good luck!

I know this doesn't answer your query but I never remove cards from any of my cameras. I've heard a few stories of others having issues by removing them.
I always use the USB cable that came with the camera, much quicker and no risks.
Cheers,
Ron.

I've been using various cards in various cameras since the D1x came out in 2001. Any day I use cards they are pulled from the camera(s) and replaced with other cards that immediately get formatted.

I believe it is mostly a matter of chance, and of course using care. I still have a 4 gig microdrive that will work in my D4s. I use it once in a while to make sure it works, and view my Alaska pictures on the small rear screen.

It's too bad none of us have had the problem the OP has. One of us might have been able to help.

I can write to the sd card, but it won't reformat in camera
I am going to pull the SD card out and try formatting it in the computer next
I will report what happened.

It sound as though the card is locked. Why not call Nikon. They have tech support.

As I said call Nikon. Could the pictures or file on the card be locked so it can’t be erased.

IF, there are NO images currently on the card, the camera will recognize this and will not format cause there is no reason to.

From what's been said thus far it seems that the camera won't reformat either slot, SD or QXD. To me that suggests the problem may be with the camera. Have you tried upgrading or re-installing your firmware? Perhaps a new SD card? Even a cheap one would eleminate the question of wheather the existing cards have been corrupted. I wish you luck resolving this problem.

Are you definitely pressing the OK button to confirm format, not just the centre button in the menu control. ( Done that myself).
